Keeping the EMI the same and shortening the tenure generally saves more total interest. Lowering the EMI and keeping the tenure gives more monthly breathing room, but you may save less interest. This guide compares both with an illustrative example computed in Python, and shows how to ask your lender.

What does it mean to reduce EMI or tenure after part payment?

A part payment is a lump sum you pay towards your outstanding principal, on top of your regular EMI. Once it is applied, the lender can do one of two things. It can keep your EMI the same and end the loan sooner, or it can keep your end date the same and lower the EMI. Many lenders let you choose. Some apply one option by default, so ask before you pay.

How do the two options compare?

Point

Reduce tenure, keep EMI

Reduce EMI, keep tenure

Monthly outgo

Same as before

Lower

Loan end date

Earlier

Same as before

Total interest

Generally lower

Lower than no part payment, but usually higher than the tenure option

Suited to

Borrowers who can afford the current EMI

Borrowers who need cash flow relief

Illustrative example computed with Python

This is an illustrative example with made up round numbers. It is not a BillCut offer or any lender’s offer. We used the standard EMI formula in Python. The loan is Rs 10,00,000 for 60 months at an illustrative 12 percent a year, so the EMI is about Rs 22,244. After 12 EMIs, about Rs 8,44,710 is outstanding. The borrower then makes a part payment of Rs 1,00,000, leaving about Rs 7,44,710.

Choice

New EMI

Months left

Interest still to pay

No part payment

Rs 22,244

48

About Rs 2,23,000

Reduce tenure, keep EMI

Rs 22,244

About 41

About Rs 1,66,600

Reduce EMI, keep tenure

About Rs 19,611

48

About Rs 1,96,600

In this made up case, reducing the tenure saves about Rs 30,000 more interest than reducing the EMI. It also finishes about 7 months earlier. The lower EMI option frees up about Rs 2,600 each month. Your own numbers will differ with the rate, tenure and part payment amount. Our guide on EMI calculators in India can help you test your case.

Which option should you choose?

Choose lower tenure if your income is steady and you want to cut total interest.

Choose lower EMI if your budget is tight, your income is uneven or you have other EMIs. See what to do when EMIs take too much salary.

Check your goals: for a home loan, interest may carry tax treatment, so look at the Income Tax portal before you change the plan. Check your CIBIL report after the part payment to see that the balance is updated.

Mix both by choosing the lower EMI now, then paying the old EMI amount anyway. You keep flexibility and still cut interest.

How do you ask your lender?

Ask whether part payments are allowed and whether any charge applies. Check your loan agreement.

Ask for the minimum part payment amount and the allowed frequency.

Tell the lender in writing which option you want: reduce tenure or reduce EMI.

After paying, ask for a revised repayment schedule and a statement.

Check the new schedule against your request, and raise any mismatch quickly.

The Reserve Bank of India has issued directions on pre-payment charges for certain loans to individual borrowers. We could not open the latest circular text while preparing this article, so confirm current rules with your lender and on the Reserve Bank of India site. Our article on early loan prepayment pros, cons and charges covers this further.

If your lender does not follow your instruction or applies an unexpected charge, escalate to its grievance team first. You can then use the National Consumer Helpline. Keep in mind that an option which lowers your EMI is different from a balance transfer, which moves your loan to a new lender. See when that makes sense in our guide on the hidden impact of a loan transfer.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to reduce EMI or tenure after part payment?

If you can afford the current EMI, reducing tenure generally saves more interest.
