This guide shows worked examples for a Rs 10,00,000 loan over 3, 5 and 7 years. All rates here are hypothetical and illustrative. They are not offers from any lender.

How is the EMI on a 10 lakh car loan calculated?

Most lenders use the reducing balance method. Each month you pay interest on the amount still owed, and the rest of the EMI reduces the principal. The formula is EMI = P x r x (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n – 1), where P is the loan, r is the monthly rate and n is the number of months.

We computed every figure below with Python. Treat them as illustrative. Your lender’s Key Facts Statement shows the real numbers for your loan.

What does the EMI look like at 3, 5 and 7 years?

Illustrative figures for a loan of Rs 10,00,000 at three hypothetical annual rates, rounded to the nearest rupee.

Hypothetical rate

Tenure

Monthly EMI

Total interest

8.5%

3 years

Rs 31,568

Rs 1,36,431

8.5%

5 years

Rs 20,517

Rs 2,30,992

8.5%

7 years

Rs 15,836

Rs 3,30,265

9.5%

3 years

Rs 32,033

Rs 1,53,186

9.5%

5 years

Rs 21,002

Rs 2,60,112

9.5%

7 years

Rs 16,344

Rs 3,72,894

10.5%

3 years

Rs 32,502

Rs 1,70,088

10.5%

5 years

Rs 21,494

Rs 2,89,634

10.5%

7 years

Rs 16,861

Rs 4,16,297

At the same hypothetical 9.5% rate, moving from 3 years to 7 years lowers the EMI by about Rs 15,700 a month. It also adds about Rs 2,19,700 in interest. A longer tenure eases the monthly burden but costs more in total.

How should you choose the tenure?

Check that the EMI fits comfortably in your monthly budget, along with your other EMIs.

Pick the shortest tenure you can pay without strain, since total interest rises with tenure.

Remember that a car loses value over time. A very long loan can leave you owing more than the car is worth for longer.

Ask for the full cost, not just the EMI. Processing fees and other charges are part of it.

Our guides on why tenure choice matters and common tenure mistakes explain this further. You can also try an EMI calculator with your own numbers.

Can you prepay a car loan without charges?

It depends on the loan type and the lender. The RBI has told banks that they are not permitted to charge foreclosure charges or pre-payment penalties on floating rate term loans to individual borrowers (RBI circular dated 7 May 2014). A similar instruction applies to NBFCs, as seen in the RBI Fair Practices Code notification.

Many car loans, however, carry a fixed rate. Those two pages do not say that fixed rate loans are free of prepayment charges. So check your own loan agreement for the rate type and any charge. Read more in our guide on prepaying a loan.

What should you check in the loan documents?

The RBI requires regulated lenders to give a Key Facts Statement before you sign a retail term loan. It sets out the interest rate, fees, annual percentage rate and charges such as foreclosure charges, in a standard format. The RBI states that charges not listed in it cannot be levied without your explicit consent. See the RBI Key Facts Statement circular.

Look at these items:

Interest rate and whether it is fixed or floating.

Processing fee and any insurance bundled with the loan.

Annual percentage rate, which includes all lender charges.

Prepayment and foreclosure terms.

The amortisation schedule, which shows how each EMI splits into interest and principal.

Does your credit profile affect the rate?

Lenders look at your credit history when they set a rate. Credit information companies such as CIBIL offer a score and report so you can see where you stand before you apply. Compare the car loan against other options, as covered in car loan vs personal loan.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender. If several EMIs are crowding your budget, this may help you plan a car purchase with more room.

Frequently asked questions

What is the EMI for a 10 lakh car loan?

It depends on the rate and tenure.
