This guide explains the usual steps in order. It is education only and does not say whether you should stop. BillCut is a debt platform, not an investment adviser.

What is the difference between pausing and stopping a SIP?

Pausing generally means skipping instalments for a set period and restarting later. Stopping, or cancelling, ends the SIP instruction. Not every fund house or platform offers a pause, and the rules differ. Check the options shown inside your account or ask the fund house. The units you already hold stay in your folio unless you choose to redeem them. Mutual funds are subject to market risks, so read the scheme documents before you act.

Action

What it generally does

Pause

Skips instalments for a period, if the fund house or platform allows it

Stop or cancel SIP

Ends future instalments for that SIP

Cancel the mandate

Removes permission for the bank or UPI app to debit

Redeem units

A separate step that sells units you already hold

How do you stop a SIP step by step?

Find where the SIP was set up. It may be the fund house site or app, a broker app, an investment platform or through a distributor.

Log in and open your SIP or systematic plans list. Pick the SIP you want to change.

Choose pause or stop, if shown, and confirm the request.

Save the confirmation by email or screenshot. Note the date and time.

If your platform has no online option, send a written request to the fund house or your distributor and keep proof.

Check the next debit date. Some requests need a few working days to take effect, so a debit may still happen. Ask the platform for its cut off.

How do you cancel the payment mandate?

SIPs are often paid through a bank auto debit mandate or UPI AutoPay. After you stop the SIP, check how the money is collected.

For a UPI AutoPay mandate, open your UPI app, find the list of autopay or recurring mandates and revoke or pause the right one.

For a bank auto debit mandate, ask your bank to cancel it, or use its app or net banking if a mandate option is shown.

Steps and screens differ across apps and banks, so use the official help of your own app. Our guides on UPI AutoPay and auto debit rules explain the payment side, and UPI for mutual funds and SIPs covers the set up.

What should you check before you stop?

Whether the plan has a lock in period or an exit load, which are stated in the scheme documents.

Whether you are stopping only that SIP or also redeeming units.

Tax effects of any redemption, which you can check with a tax professional.

Other SIPs, so you do not cancel the wrong one.

If you want a refresher on how SIPs work, read SIP explained with examples. SCORES is for complaints against listed companies, registered intermediaries and market infrastructure institutions, and it advises you to take the issue up with the entity first.

For a bank, the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme FAQ says you must first approach the regulated entity and can go to the Ombudsman if there is no reply in 30 days or you are not satisfied. The helpline does not give investment advice. The SEBI investor website has more safety material.

Is stopping the SIP the only way to ease cash pressure?

Not always, but that depends on your situation and BillCut does not advise on it. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option.
