Term, endowment, whole life and money back plans are types of traditional plans. This page explains how each works in plain words. It does not recommend any product and it does not promise returns.

What are the main types of life insurance plans?

The IRDAI life insurance page says life policies are broadly split into traditional plans and ULIPs. It describes traditional plans as offering in-built guarantees. The table below summarises each type, using the regulator’s descriptions where it gives them.

Type

What it does

Who bears investment risk

Term

Gives cover for a set period. No benefit is normally payable if the life assured survives the term.

Not an investment product

Whole life

Gives lifelong protection.

Depends on the plan terms

Endowment

A savings linked policy with a specific maturity date.

Depends on the plan terms

Money back

Returns a percentage of the sum assured at set intervals as a survival benefit. The balance is paid at maturity.

Depends on the plan terms

ULIP

Combines risk cover and investment.

The policyholder

How does term insurance work?

You pay a premium for a chosen period. If the life assured dies during that period, the plan pays the benefit set out in the policy. If the person survives the term, no benefit is normally payable. Term plans focus on protection, not savings. Our note on term insurance in India covers what to look at when comparing plans.

What is an endowment plan?

An endowment policy combines life cover with saving. It has a specific maturity date. The terms, such as the benefits payable and the premium, are set out in the policy document, so read the benefit illustration your insurer provides.

What is a whole life plan?

A whole life plan gives protection for your entire life, not a fixed term. Check the plan document for how long premiums are due and what the plan pays.

What is a money back plan?

In a money back plan, a percentage of the sum assured is returned to the policyholder at set intervals if they survive, as a survival benefit. The remaining amount is paid at maturity. The IRDAI page describes this structure without using a separate heading for it.

What is a ULIP?

A ULIP provides a combination of risk cover and investment. The IRDAI page states that the investment risk is borne by the policyholder. That means the value of your units can go up or down with markets. Read more in our guides to ULIPs in simple terms and life insurance versus investment linked plans.

For comparison, the SEBI mutual fund FAQs state that mutual fund investments are subject to market risks. See the SEBI FAQs for mutual fund investors. Market linked products need the same care in each case.

What is the free look period?

The IRDAI page says a policyholder can review the policy and opt out during a free look period of 15 days, or 30 days for electronic policies, counted from receiving the policy document. You must state your reasons for objection. On cancellation the premium is refunded after deductions such as medical examination costs, the proportionate risk cover and stamp duty. Check your own policy for the exact terms.

What should you check before buying any plan?

What the plan pays, and when it pays.

How long you must pay premiums, and what happens if you miss one.

Which charges are deducted.

Whether the premium fits your monthly budget next to loan EMIs.

The insurer and the intermediary are regulated. SEBI’s investor website advises understanding any investment before making it and choosing regulated products.

If you have a complaint against an insurer, IRDAI’s policyholder portal lists the complaint channels.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform.
