One reason can be limits that apply to how much mutual funds may invest abroad. This page explains the general idea in plain words. It does not confirm any current halt and it names no fund house. For the latest position, check the notice from your own fund house.

What is an international mutual fund?

It is a scheme that invests part or all of its money in securities outside India. SEBI’s FAQs mention schemes that invest at least 80% of total assets in permissible overseas investments. They treat these differently on the timing of NAV disclosure and on redemption. Per the SEBI FAQs for mutual fund investors, NAV for such schemes is disclosed by 10 AM on the next business day, and redemption proceeds are paid within five working days instead of the usual three.

Why can overseas fund investments face limits?

SEBI sets rules on how much mutual funds may invest overseas. SEBI has issued circulars on this topic, such as its circular on enhancement of overseas investment limits for mutual funds dated 5 November 2020. We could not open the full text of that circular, so we do not state its limits here.

An older SEBI press release from 26 September 2007 shows how such limits have been structured. It describes a limit for each mutual fund, and an industry wide aggregate limit set by the Reserve Bank of India. It also shows that the numbers have been changed over time. Those figures are historic and should not be taken as today’s limits.

The general point is simple. If limits are set at the level of a fund house or the whole industry, a fund that invests abroad can reach its room. When that happens, it may not be able to take in fresh money until room opens up.

What may investors see when a limit is reached?

New SIP registrations paused for a scheme.

Existing SIP instalments not accepted for a period.

Lump sum investments stopped or capped.

A notice from the fund house or platform explaining the change.

The exact steps differ by fund house and scheme. Always read the notice for your scheme.

What happens to money already invested?

A pause on new investments is a different thing from a pause on redemption. In general, a notice about new inflows concerns money coming in. Your existing units remain yours, and their value still moves with the fund’s holdings. Check the notice to see whether redemption is affected. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks, and that includes funds that invest abroad.

Why does this matter for SIP investors?

A SIP depends on regular instalments. If a scheme stops accepting them, your plan has a gap. Our guide on SIPs explained with examples shows how regular investing works, and paying for SIPs by UPI covers the payment side. A halted SIP mandate can also leave a bank debit instruction active, so review it with your bank or platform.

What can you do if your SIP is paused?

Read the official notice from the fund house or platform.

Check whether only new money is affected or also redemption.

Do not move money in a hurry because of a headline. Think about your goal and time frame.

Understand the scheme before switching. SEBI’s investor website advises understanding an investment first and choosing regulated products.

Ask the fund house or platform if you are unsure. Our guide to starting in mutual funds lists basics to review.

What other risks do overseas funds carry?

Besides market moves, overseas funds can be affected by currency changes and by the rules of the countries where they invest. These add to the usual market risk. Read the scheme’s offer documents for its risk label and costs. Past performance of a scheme is not an indicator of its future performance.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform.
