Start by listing what you owe, then talk to your lenders early, ask what hardship options exist and avoid anyone who promises quick relief for a fee. This guide is written with care for people under stress. It cannot promise any result, and every lender decides for itself.

What should you do first when dues pile up?

Debt stress is common. Do not take a new loan in panic, and do not hide from lenders. Our guides on fixing debt overload and breaking out of a debt spiral cover the wider picture.

Step 1: How do you list your dues?

Write every loan and card in a table. Include the lender, the amount owed, the monthly payment, the due date and any late charges. Add your monthly income and fixed costs such as rent and food.

Item

What to note

Lender and loan type

Card, personal loan, app loan or other

Amount owed and monthly payment

From the latest statement

Due date and late charges

To see what is most urgent

Income and fixed costs

To see what you can pay each month

Step 2: How do you talk to your lender?

Contact the lender before you miss a payment, if you can. Be honest about your situation, say what you can pay and ask for a reply in writing. If you are already behind, your rights during recovery matter, and how to complain about loan harassment explains the route.

Step 3: What hardship options can you ask about?

Ask the lender what it can offer. Options may include a longer tenure, a lower monthly payment, a temporary pause or a restructured plan. Not every lender offers each option, and the terms and effect on your credit record depend on the lender. Ask for the terms in writing before you agree. Read our guide on EMI restructuring to see the trade offs.

Step 4: How do you avoid predatory apps and advance fee scams?

Be careful with any app or caller who offers a loan to clear your debt but first asks for a fee, a deposit or an insurance charge.

Do not give access to your contacts, photos or messages to an unknown app.

Do not share OTPs or UPI PINs.

Check that a lender is a regulated entity. The RBI Sachet portal has a registered entities section, listed by regulator, that can help you check.

See how to identify fake loan apps. If you have already lost money, call the cyber fraud helpline 1930. A PIB release describes it as a helpline for victims of online financial fraud. You can also look up registered entities and file a complaint on RBI Sachet.

Step 5: Is credit counselling an option?

A counsellor can help you build a budget and talk to lenders. Check who is running the service, ask about every fee before you sign and avoid anyone who promises to wipe out your debt.

Step 6: When might consolidation be considered?

Consolidation means moving several dues into one loan with one EMI. It can make payments easier to track, and it may or may not lower your cost, depending on the new rate, fees and tenure. Compare the total amount you will pay, not only the EMI. It suits some people and not others. Take care not to run up the old cards again afterwards.

Where can you complain to RBI?

If a bank or a regulated lender treats you unfairly, first write to that entity. The RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme FAQ says you must first approach the regulated entity, and you can go to the Ombudsman if there is no reply within 30 days or you are dissatisfied with its reply. You must file within 90 days after that waiting period or the entity’s last reply, whichever is later. You can file online on the CMS portal at cms.rbi.org.in, by email to crpc@rbi.org.in or by post. There is no fee. The toll free number 14448 can guide you on filing, but it does not accept complaints. Only certain entities are covered, such as commercial banks, certain NBFCs and credit information companies. See also the RBI consumer education FAQ index.

If this feels heavy, speak to someone you trust. You are allowed to ask for help.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform.
