In short, restructuring changes the terms of a loan you already have, with the same lender. Consolidation replaces several loans with one new loan, usually from a different lender. Restructuring is for borrowers who cannot keep paying. Consolidation is for those who can pay but want a simpler plan.

What is loan restructuring?

Restructuring means you and your lender agree to new terms on an existing loan. The lender may stretch the tenure, lower the EMI, or give a short break. The debt is not paid off. It is reshaped.

It is usually offered when a borrower is in real financial stress. The lender decides whether to agree.

What is loan consolidation?

Consolidation means taking one new loan and using it to close two or more existing dues. After that, you pay one EMI to one lender. A balance transfer is one form of this. You qualify based on your income and credit profile, so it works better while your repayment record is still intact. Our guide on balance transfer for a home loan shows one form.

How do they compare?

Point

Loan restructuring

Loan consolidation

What changes

Terms of an existing loan

Several loans become one new loan

Lender

Same lender

New lender, often a different one

Who it suits

Borrowers who cannot pay as agreed

Borrowers who can pay but have many EMIs or high rates

Typical cost

More interest overall if tenure grows

Processing fee and possible closure charges on old loans

Credit report

Account may be shown as restructured

Old loans show closed, a new loan appears

How does each affect your credit report?

For restructuring, RBI’s 2020 COVID-era resolution framework told lenders to show a restructured status on the account when the plan involved renegotiations that count as restructuring. That is a rule from that framework, so ask your lender how your own plan will be reported. You can read the circular on the RBI website.

For consolidation, the old accounts should show as closed after the lender reports closure, and a new account appears. A fresh loan application usually leads to a credit enquiry. If something looks wrong, CIBIL offers a dispute option for inaccuracies in the report. Our post on loans missing from a credit report helps.

What does each cost? An illustrative example

The numbers below are illustrative, worked out with a standard EMI formula. They are not an offer.

Take a loan of Rs 3,00,000 at 14 percent a year. If you repay over 24 months, the EMI is about Rs 14,404 and total interest is about Rs 45,693. If the lender restructures it to 48 months at the same rate, the EMI falls to about Rs 8,198, but total interest rises to about Rs 93,501.

Tenure

EMI (illustrative)

Total interest (illustrative)

24 months

Rs 14,404

Rs 45,693

48 months

Rs 8,198

Rs 93,501

So relief today can mean more interest later. A longer tenure on a consolidated loan has the same effect.

When does each option fit?

Restructuring fits when you have missed or are about to miss EMIs and cannot afford the current amount.

Consolidation fits when you have several EMIs, due dates are hard to track, and your repayment record is still good.

Neither fits if spending is higher than income. Fix the budget first.

For a wider look at relief options, see our post on EMI restructuring.

What should you check before choosing?

Ask each lender for the foreclosure or prepayment terms in writing. Under RBI’s Pre-payment Charges on Loans Directions, 2025, banks and NBFCs cannot charge prepayment charges on floating rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes. The directions apply to loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. Other loans follow the lender’s policy, and charges must be disclosed in the sanction letter. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender. It is one route among several, and restructuring with your own lender may suit some cases better.

Frequently asked questions

Is loan restructuring the same as loan consolidation?

No. Restructuring changes the terms of one existing loan with the same lender.
