A consolidation loan replaces several dues with one loan, so the right pick is the one that costs less in total and has clear terms. Use the checklist below before you accept any offer.

What should you compare in a consolidation loan?

Look at five things side by side for every offer: APR, fees, tenure, prepayment terms and total cost. Ask each lender for its Key Facts Statement so the figures come in the same format. The RBI circular on Key Facts Statement says the statement must include the APR and a repayment schedule.

1. APR, not just the interest rate

APR is the yearly cost of credit. The RBI circular says it includes interest and other charges tied to the loan. Two offers with the same interest rate can have different APR if the fees differ. Compare APR with APR.

2. Fees

List every charge: processing fee, documentation fee, insurance if bundled, and late payment charges. The circular says the lender must disclose third-party charges it collects, such as insurance, separately in the statement. It also says a fee left out of the statement cannot be charged later without your explicit consent. Our guide on avoiding high processing fees gives more detail.

3. Tenure

A longer tenure lowers the EMI but usually raises the total interest. Pick the shortest tenure whose EMI you can pay comfortably each month. Read how a longer tenure changes your EMI for the trade-off.

4. Prepayment terms

You may want to close the loan early. Under the RBI pre-payment charges directions, regulated lenders cannot charge pre-payment penalties on floating-rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes, for loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. Whether charges apply must be stated in the sanction letter, the agreement and the statement. Ask if your offer is floating or fixed rate. See also early prepayment pros and cons.

5. Total cost

Total cost is the EMI times the number of months, plus all fees. Compare it with what you would pay on your current dues if you kept them.

Worked example (illustrative)

All rates here are hypothetical example rates used only to show the maths. They are not a BillCut offer or a quote from any lender. Say you have two dues: Rs 2,00,000 at a hypothetical 36 percent a year and Rs 1,50,000 at a hypothetical 42 percent a year, each with 24 months to repay. Now compare two hypothetical loan offers of Rs 3,50,000.

Item

Current dues

Offer A

Offer B

Rate a year

36 and 42 percent

16 percent

18 percent

Tenure

24 months

48 months

36 months

Processing fee

None

None

2 percent, Rs 7,000

Monthly EMI

Rs 21,150

Rs 9,919

Rs 12,653

Total of EMIs

Rs 5,07,610

Rs 4,76,117

Rs 4,55,520

Total with fee

Rs 5,07,610

Rs 4,76,117

Rs 4,62,520

EMIs were computed in Python with the standard formula, EMI = P x r x (1+r)^n divided by ((1+r)^n minus 1), where r is the monthly rate. Offer A has the lowest EMI, but Offer B costs less in total despite a higher rate and a fee, because it runs for a shorter time. The lowest EMI is not always the lowest cost. This is why a lower EMI is not always cheaper.

6. Check the lender and the paperwork

Confirm the lender is a bank or an NBFC regulated by the RBI. The RBI Fair Practices Code for NBFCs says sanction letters should state the loan amount, terms and annualised interest rate in a language you understand, and that you should get a copy of the agreement. Penal interest should be shown in bold in the agreement.

7. Check your own position

Your credit record affects the offers you get. CIBIL says lenders use the score to decide on approval and that it can affect the rate you are offered. Our page on personal loan eligibility explains the basics.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender. It also handles other debt types, so you can ask about more than card dues.

Frequently asked questions

What is the first thing to check in a consolidation loan?

Check the APR and the total cost, not just the EMI.
