Myth vs Fact

By BillCut
Last updated: 3 November 2026

Does a new loan reduce CIBIL score? Not always, and not forever. A new loan can cause a small, short term dip, but the score is built from many details, and repayment over time usually matters more. The claim that your score falls every time you take a new loan is a myth. The fact is more careful than that.

What is the myth, and what is the fact?

Myth

Fact

Your CIBIL score will reduce every time you take a new loan.

A new loan can affect your report in a few ways. The effect depends on how you handle the loan afterwards, and it can go either way over time.

The CIBIL score basics page says your score is derived from the Accounts and Enquiries sections of your CIBIL report, on a scale of 300 to 900. It advises you to apply for new credit cautiously. It does not say that every new loan lowers your score.

What changes on your report when you take a new loan?

Three things can change, and they work differently.

An enquiry appears. The CIBIL reports page explains that an enquiry is created every time a lender asks TransUnion CIBIL for your report. It also says an enquiry is not a credit facility you have taken.

A new account appears. The same page lists new accounts opened and accounts closed among the factors that count.

Your overall debt picture shifts. A new unsecured loan adds to what you owe, and the CIBIL basics page warns that too many unsecured loans may be viewed negatively.

None of these is a fixed penalty. Each is one input among several.

Why can a new loan sometimes lower the score at first?

A new account has no repayment record yet. Lenders also see a recent enquiry and a larger total debt. If you applied to several lenders in a short time, the report shows several enquiries together. Our guide on how many loan enquiries affect you looks at that pattern in more detail.

How does a new loan affect utilisation?

Utilisation is the share of your available credit limit that you use. The CIBIL reports page lists credit utilisation among the named factors. A personal loan has no revolving limit like a credit card, so the effect is indirect. But if you use a new loan to pay down a credit card, your card utilisation may fall. If you take a loan and then run up the card again, it may rise.

Illustrative example: you owe 60,000 rupees on a card with a 1,00,000 rupee limit, so you use 60 percent. You clear the card using a new loan. Your card use drops to zero, but you now owe the lender instead. Whether that helps your score depends on the rest of your report, and no outcome is certain. Read more about how credit utilisation affects your score.

Can a new loan help your score over time?

Yes, it can, if you repay on time. The CIBIL reports page names payment history, including late payments and the size of overdue amounts, as a factor. Every on time EMI adds a clean entry to that record. Lenders report to credit bureaus regularly. Under the RBI Master Direction, lenders must update their records every fortnight and report all repayments, including the last instalment.

The reverse is also true. One missed EMI can hurt more than the enquiry ever did. Our post on a missed EMI versus a few days late explains why timing matters.

What should you check before taking a new loan?

Can you afford the EMI from your regular income?

Have you applied elsewhere recently? Spread out applications.

Have you checked your own report for errors? The RBI free report notice gives you one free full credit report a year from each credit information company.

Will the loan replace costlier debt, or just add to it?

What is a sensible way to think about it?

Ask what the loan does to your finances, not only to a number. For more habits that support a healthy report, see our guide to ways to improve your CIBIL score and the difference between the credit bureaus.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender. If you hold several high interest dues, one structured EMI may be easier to track.

Frequently asked questions

Does a new loan reduce CIBIL score immediately?

It can cause a small change because of the new enquiry and the new account.
