You move your outstanding loan from your current lender to a new lender, ideally at a lower cost, and then repay the new loan. This guide lists what to do, in order, and what to check at each step.

What is a personal loan balance transfer?

The new lender pays off your existing loan. You then owe the new lender, under new terms. It can help if your current rate or EMI is hard to carry. It does not help if the new loan costs the same or more once all charges are counted. If you feel you pay too much, read our posts on what to do when your personal loan interest is too high and paying too much on a personal loan.

What are the steps to transfer a personal loan?

Step 1: Collect your current loan details

Ask your lender for a loan statement and a foreclosure statement. Note the outstanding principal, the interest rate, the EMI, the months left and any charges.

Step 2: Check whether you will pay a pre-payment charge

Under RBI directions, lenders cannot levy pre-payment charges on floating-rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes, sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. Other loans may carry a charge, and it must be stated in your sanction letter and agreement. Read the rule on the RBI website.

Step 3: Check your credit report

New lenders look at your report. CIBIL notes that past credit behaviour can have a long lasting impact. Fix errors and keep your current EMIs on time before you apply.

Step 4: Compare offers using the Key Facts Statement

RBI requires lenders to give a Key Facts Statement for retail term loans before the loan contract is signed. It shows the annual percentage rate (APR), which covers interest and other charges the lender levies, and the repayment schedule. A lender cannot charge a fee that is not in the statement without your explicit consent. You can read the RBI circular on the Key Facts Statement. Compare APR, not just the headline rate. Also check the tenure, since a longer tenure lowers the EMI but can raise the total interest. See why tenure choice matters.

Step 5: Apply and share documents

Item

What to keep ready

Identity and address

KYC documents asked by the lender

Income

Salary slips or bank statements, as the lender asks

Existing loan

Loan statement and foreclosure statement

Loan agreement

Copy of your current sanction letter

Step 6: Review the sanction and sign

Read the final terms and the Key Facts Statement before you accept. For loans offered through digital lending, RBI directions give a cooling-off period during which you can exit by repaying the principal and proportionate APR without a penalty. The lender sets this period. See the RBI Digital Lending Directions.

Step 7: Keep paying until the old loan is closed

In most cases the new lender sends the payout straight to the old lender. Until you have confirmation that the old loan is closed, do not skip your EMI. A missed EMI can hurt your report.

Step 8: Get the closure proof and check your report

Ask the old lender for a closure letter and a no objection certificate. Then check that your report shows the old loan as closed and the new loan with the right amount. CIBIL explains that a closed account means the full amount was paid, which is what you want to see. If something looks wrong, raise it with the lender and the bureau. See the CIBIL page on settled and closed status.

What does it look like in numbers?

This is an illustrative example only. Say you owe 2,00,000 rupees with 24 months left. Your current loan carries a rate of 18 percent a year. A new offer carries 14 percent a year, with a processing fee of 2 percent. The lower rate cuts interest, but the fee is paid up front. You gain only if the interest saved is larger than the fee and any pre-payment charge. Run this check on your own numbers before you decide.

If you want to see whether a lower cost option may fit your dues, you can start here.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform.
