Here is how to run the checklist.

Is the lender regulated by the RBI?

Start here. The RBI explains that a non banking finance company generally needs an RBI certificate of registration, and the RBI website carries a list. See the RBI FAQ on NBFCs for how to check. For apps, the RBI’s digital lending directions say a listed app does not mean RBI registration or endorsement, so check the lender behind it. Our guide on checking the RBI list before you borrow walks through it.

What is a Key Facts Statement and why read it?

The RBI’s circular on Key Facts Statements says lenders must give you a KFS in a standard format before the loan contract is executed, in a language you understand. It covers retail term loans sanctioned on or after 1 October 2024 and has a validity period, so you can compare without pressure. The KFS must show the annual percentage rate (APR), which covers interest and all other charges, plus the repayment schedule. Fees not listed in it cannot be charged later without your explicit consent.

How do I work out the total cost?

Do not stop at the interest rate. Add the processing fee, insurance or other add ons, and any charge for late payment or early closure. The APR in the KFS gives one yearly cost figure, so use it to compare offers.

Illustrative example: you borrow Rs 50,000 for 12 months. If the lender adds a processing fee and an insurance add on, you repay more than the EMIs alone suggest. Ask for the full repayment total in rupees and compare it across lenders. Our post on hidden loan charges Indians often miss lists common ones.

Will the EMI fit my monthly budget?

Look at your take home pay, not your gross pay. Subtract rent, food, travel and savings first. Whatever remains is what the EMI can use.

Illustrative item

Amount per month

Take home pay

Rs 30,000

Rent, food, travel, bills

Rs 20,000

Savings and emergencies

Rs 4,000

Room left for an EMI

Rs 6,000

If the EMI is close to that room, choose a smaller loan or a longer tenure, and check what the longer tenure costs in total. See EMI affordability under Rs 30,000 income for more.

What repayment terms should I confirm?

EMI date and how it is paid, such as auto debit.

Late payment charges and what happens after a missed EMI.

Prepayment or foreclosure charges.

Whether you can exit after signing. For digital loans, the RBI directions say you can exit by repaying the principal and proportionate APR, with no penalty, during a cooling off period set by the lender that is not less than one day. A one time processing fee may be retained if it was disclosed in the KFS.

What should I know about my credit report first?

Lenders report your repayments to credit bureaus. According to CIBIL, a score is a three digit number from 300 to 900, drawn from the accounts and enquiries on your report. It advises paying dues on time, keeping balances low and applying for new credit in moderation, since too many applications can look negative. CIBIL also notes that checking your own score does not hurt it. A first loan paid on time can help build your history. Read more in why first time borrowers often pay higher interest.

Is it a good idea to borrow at all?

Ask what the loan is for. If it is a want that can wait, saving first may cost less. If it is a need, borrow only what you must. If you already carry costly dues and are thinking of a new loan to fix them, look at your options before adding another EMI.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform.
