The safest habit is simple: deal only with a lender registered with the RBI, never pay a stranger to “release” a loan, and read every document before you sign. This guide shows the red flags, the checks to run and what to do if you are cheated.

What are the common red flags of education loan fraud?

Fraud often looks like a quick, friendly offer. Watch for these signs.

An agent asks for an upfront fee through UPI to a personal account before any sanction letter.

The offer comes by WhatsApp, SMS or a social media page, not from a branch or a known lender site.

You are pushed to decide today, or told the offer will vanish.

The agent asks for your OTP, card PIN or net banking password. A real lender never needs these.

If two or more of these show up, stop and verify before you share anything. Our guide on avoiding loan scams when you need money fast covers the same pressure tactics.

How do I verify a lender before I apply?

Check who you are really dealing with. The RBI explains that a non banking finance company generally needs an RBI certificate of registration, and the RBI website carries a list. Read the RBI FAQ on NBFCs to see how to check. The RBI Sachet portal also lists registered entities under different regulators.

For loan apps, the RBI’s digital lending rules say lenders must report their apps for a public directory. A listing does not mean RBI registration or endorsement, so still verify the lender. Read more in how to check the RBI list before you borrow.

What documents should I see before I sign?

Under the RBI’s circular on Key Facts Statements, regulated lenders must give you a Key Facts Statement in a standard format before the loan contract is signed. It must show the annual percentage rate and the amortisation schedule, and it should be explained to you. The circular says fees not listed in it cannot be charged later without your explicit consent.

Check

What a genuine offer shows

Lender name

Matches the RBI list and the account that receives payment

Key Facts Statement

Interest, APR, all fees, repayment schedule

Sanction letter

Amount, tenure, moratorium terms in writing

Fee requests

Listed in the documents, not asked in cash or to a personal UPI ID

These rules apply to new retail term loans sanctioned on or after 1 October 2024. For the basics, see our post on education loans in India.

What should I do if I have been cheated?

Act in this order, and act fast.

Stop all payments and do not share more details or OTPs.

Call the 1930 cyber crime helpline. A PIB release says 1930 is a toll free number to get help in lodging online cyber complaints, and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal accepts reports of cyber crimes.

Tell your bank about any payment made so it can look at the transaction.

Save screenshots, chats, receipts, phone numbers and account details.

Report a fake or unregistered lender on Sachet, or to the nearest RBI office.

Check your credit report for loans you never took, if your documents were shared.

What are my rights and where can I complain?

If a regulated bank or NBFC is at fault, first complain to the lender. The RBI’s digital lending directions say you can escalate to the RBI complaint portal under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme if the complaint is rejected, you are not satisfied, or you get no reply within 30 days. The RBI’s complaints page links to the portal to file against a regulated entity. Our post on the RBI ombudsman complaint process explains the steps.

For other consumer grievances, the National Consumer Helpline accepts complaints on its portal, app or toll free number 1915 and forwards them to the company concerned.

How do I protect myself from here?

Apply only through official bank or lender channels, compare at least two offers, and keep copies of every document. Share Aadhaar, PAN and bank details only with a verified lender.

If you already carry costly dues, such as card balances or personal loan EMIs, and want to see if they can be restructured, you can look at your options.

Check your options with BillCut

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform.
