After that you owe money to one lender and pay one EMI. It does not erase what you owe. It changes who you owe and how you repay.

What does loan consolidation mean with a simple picture?

Think of three bills arriving on three different dates. You pay a phone EMI on the 3rd, a card bill on the 12th and a small personal loan on the 25th. Each has its own rate and its own penalty if you are late.

With consolidation, one new loan clears all three. From then on there is one date, one amount and one lender to deal with. The old accounts are paid off and closed.

Which dues can be consolidated?

Credit card balances.

Personal loans.

Other EMIs, such as those for gadgets or small purchases.

Whether a lender accepts a particular due depends on its own rules. Ask before you apply.

What does a worked example look like?

This example is illustrative only. It is not a BillCut offer and not a market quote.

Asha has three dues. She also has a plan to merge them into one loan.

Due

Monthly payment

Months left

Still to pay

Phone EMI

Rs 3,000

10

Rs 30,000

Card balance in EMI

Rs 4,000

15

Rs 60,000

Personal loan

Rs 5,000

20

Rs 100,000

Total

Rs 12,000

varies

Rs 190,000

Say a new loan offers one EMI of Rs 9,000 for 24 months. That is Rs 3,000 less each month, which feels lighter. But 9,000 times 24 is Rs 216,000, which is Rs 26,000 more than the Rs 190,000 she was set to pay. The lower EMI came from stretching the repayment.

The takeaway for beginners: consolidation can ease the monthly burden, but always compare the total you will repay, not only the monthly amount.

What are the pros and cons?

Pros:

One due date, so it is easier to avoid missed payments.

A possible lower rate, if the new loan is priced below your old dues.

A possibly smaller monthly payment.

Cons:

A longer tenure can raise the total interest you pay.

Fees may apply, such as processing or closure charges on old loans.

It will not help if you keep adding new dues afterwards.

What should you check before you apply?

Ask for the Key Facts Statement. The RBI requires lenders to give it to a borrower before a retail loan contract is executed. It sets out the annual percentage rate, which counts all the charges the lender levies, and a repayment schedule. The lender has to explain it and it stays valid for at least three working days for loans of seven days or more. Read the RBI Key Facts Statement circular for the rule.

Also check whether your old loans carry closure charges. The RBI’s pre-payment charges directions stop lenders from charging pre-payment fees on floating rate non-business loans to individuals sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. For other loans, the lender’s own policy applies and must be disclosed in the agreement.

How does consolidation affect your credit score?

CIBIL explains that the score runs from 300 to 900 and that payment history and enquiries both matter. It advises applying for new credit in moderation. Its credit basics FAQ also says too many unsecured loans may be viewed negatively. So a consolidation that cuts missed payments can help, while repeated applications can hurt.
