It can simplify your month. It helps your wallet only if the new loan costs less overall than what you were paying before. This guide explains how it works, how to test the maths, and what other routes exist.

How does a debt consolidation personal loan work?

You apply for one personal loan that is large enough to clear your other dues. The lender releases the money, you use it to close those dues, and you then repay the new loan in fixed EMIs. The dues can be credit card balances, existing personal loans or other EMIs.

List every due with its outstanding amount, interest rate, EMI and any closure charge.

Apply for a loan that covers the total. Ask for the Key Facts Statement before you sign.

Use the money to close each old due. Keep the closure proofs.

Repay the new loan on its due date every month.

The RBI requires lenders to give borrowers a Key Facts Statement before a retail loan contract is executed. It must show the annual percentage rate, which includes all charges the lender levies. Charges that are not in the statement cannot be levied during the loan without your consent. You can read the rule on the RBI Key Facts Statement circular.

When does it make sense?

It tends to make sense when the new rate is lower than the blended rate on your old dues, and you can keep the tenure short enough that total interest falls. It also helps if missed due dates are your main problem, since one date is easier to track than five.

It makes less sense if you plan to keep using the cleared credit cards. Then you carry the new loan and fresh card balances together.

What does it cost?

Look at four items, all of which should appear in the loan paperwork:

The interest rate and the annual percentage rate.

Processing fees and any other upfront charge.

Closure or pre-payment charges on the dues you are clearing.

The tenure, because a longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises total interest.

On pre-payment, the RBI has directed that lenders must not levy pre-payment charges on floating rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes, for loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. For other loans, charges follow the lender’s policy and must be disclosed. Read the details in the RBI pre-payment charges directions, then check each old loan’s agreement. Our post on avoiding foreclosure penalties covers this in more detail.

What does an illustrative example look like?

The numbers below are illustrative only. They are not BillCut offers and not market quotes.

Existing due

Illustrative monthly payment

Months left

Total still to pay

Credit card balance

Rs 6,209

12

about Rs 74,500

Personal loan

Rs 5,991

24

about Rs 143,800

Other EMI

Rs 4,453

10

about Rs 44,500

Combined

Rs 16,653

varies

about Rs 262,800

Suppose one new loan of Rs 220,000 at an illustrative 16 percent a year clears all three. Over 36 months the EMI is about Rs 7,735 and the total repaid is about Rs 278,400. That is a much lighter month, but about Rs 15,600 more in total. Over 24 months the EMI is about Rs 10,772 and the total is about Rs 258,500, which is slightly below the old total. The lesson: a lower EMI alone is not a saving. Compare total repayment, not just the monthly figure.

How does it affect your credit score?

CIBIL says payment history carries heavy weight, and that late payments or EMI defaults hurt the score. It also says too many loan enquiries may hurt, so apply in moderation. On the other hand, CIBIL says too many unsecured loans may be viewed negatively.
