Each person has an individual report and score, but CIBIL says that in co-signed or jointly held accounts you are held equally liable for missed payments. So if one borrower stops paying, the effect can reach both. This post sticks to what CIBIL and RBI pages say.

Do both borrowers get one shared score?

No. CIBIL writes about couples that they keep separate credit reports and scores, and that partners’ scores do not get clubbed. You can read this in its guides on credit facts for couples and building credit together. Those pages are written for spouses, but the point is general. A score belongs to one person.

The loan, however, can sit on more than one report. RBI’s Credit Information Companies Directions tell credit information companies to capture co-borrower and guarantor details where applicable. They say the report shows loans a person has taken as borrower, co-borrower or guarantor.

What do the official pages say, and what do they leave out?

Point

Said on official pages

Not stated on the pages we read

Separate scores

Each person has an individual report and score

The exact score change for each person

Liability

CIBIL says you are held equally liable for missed payments in co-signed or jointly held accounts

How a lender recovers dues between the two

Reporting

RBI says reports show loans as borrower, co-borrower or guarantor

Whether a joint loan is shown in the same way by every lender

Effect of another holder

CIBIL says a joint holder’s missed payments can affect your access to credit

How long the effect lasts

We do not fill the right hand column with guesses. It advises watching these accounts every month. Its score guide says late payments or defaults on EMIs have a negative impact on the score.

In plain words, a missed EMI is not only one person’s problem on the lender’s side. The paying borrower can see it on their file too, and it can matter when they apply for credit later.

What does this look like in a simple example?

This is an illustrative example with made up numbers. It is not a BillCut offer.

Two borrowers take a joint home loan with an EMI of Rs 35,000.

For some months, the second borrower stops sending a share. The first borrower pays part of the EMI and the rest is overdue.

The lender reports the overdue amount on the account.

Months later, the first borrower applies for a car loan. The lender sees the overdue joint account in the report and may weigh it against the application.

The first borrower may have paid everything they were asked to pay. The lender still sees the whole account.

What can each borrower do to protect their record?

Pay the full EMI on time, by auto debit from an account both can see.

Check the report every month, as CIBIL advises for joint accounts.

Get your free full credit report. RBI’s directions give one per calendar year from each credit information company.

Talk to the lender early if one person cannot pay. Do not wait for the account to go overdue.

If you spot an error, raise a dispute. CIBIL’s disputes FAQ says it takes about 30 days, depending on the lender.

If other high interest card or loan EMIs are squeezing the household budget and making the home loan EMI harder to pay, Check your options with BillCut.

Where can you read more?

See our posts on joint loan mistakes, what a co-applicant owes on default, why co-applicants matter and loans missing from a credit report.

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender.

Frequently asked questions

Does a joint home loan show on both borrowers’ credit reports?

RBI’s directions say reports show loans taken as borrower, co-borrower or guarantor, so a joint loan can show for each person with their role.

Do we share one CIBIL score?

No. CIBIL describes separate reports and scores for each person.
