Put them into one formula and you get a fixed monthly instalment. This guide shows the formula, a worked example with round numbers and a few checks to run before you accept an offer.

What is the formula to calculate personal loan EMI?

The standard formula is:

EMI = P x r x (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n – 1)

P is the loan amount, also called the principal.

r is the monthly interest rate. Divide the yearly rate by 12, then by 100.

n is the number of monthly instalments.

RBI describes EMIs as equated monthly instalments that fully repay the loan, shown with an amortisation schedule over the whole tenor. The formula above is how that equal figure is worked out.

How do you work through an example?

This is an illustrative example with round numbers. It is not a BillCut offer and does not reflect any lender. Take a loan of Rs 5,00,000 at 12 percent a year for 36 months.

Monthly rate r = 12 / 12 / 100 = 0.01.

n = 36, so (1.01)^36 is about 1.4308.

Top part: 5,00,000 x 0.01 x 1.4308 = about 7,154.

Bottom part: 1.4308 – 1 = 0.4308.

EMI = 7,154 / 0.4308 = about Rs 16,607 a month.

Over 36 months you pay about Rs 5,97,858 in total, so the interest cost is about Rs 97,858.

How does the tenure change the EMI?

A longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises the total interest. The same illustrative loan at 12 percent looks like this.

Tenure

EMI (Rs)

Total interest (Rs)

24 months

23,537

64,882

36 months

16,607

97,858

48 months

13,167

1,32,012

Our post on why your personal loan tenure choice matters goes deeper into this trade off.

How much of each EMI is interest?

Early EMIs carry more interest. In the same example, month one interest is 5,00,000 x 0.01 = Rs 5,000, so about Rs 11,607 of the EMI reduces the principal. Month two interest is about Rs 4,884 and principal about Rs 11,723. By month three, interest falls to about Rs 4,767. This shrinking interest is what an amortisation schedule shows.

What can change your EMI later?

If the loan has a floating rate, the EMI or the number of instalments can change when the benchmark moves. RBI says lenders must offer the borrower a choice between a higher EMI or a longer tenure when a rate reset raises the cost, and quarterly statements must show the EMI, the remaining instalments and the rate. For a fixed rate loan, the EMI stays the same for the term.

What should you check before accepting an offer?

Ask for the Key Facts Statement. RBI requires it for new retail term loans before the contract is signed, and it carries the annual percentage rate with all charges.

Compare the annual percentage rate, not just the interest rate. Processing fees and other charges change the real cost.

Run the formula yourself, then compare it with the lender’s figure.

Check that the EMI fits your monthly budget with room to spare.

Our guide to EMI calculators in India and our note on borrowers who pick the wrong EMI tenure are useful companions.

What if you already have several EMIs?

Add up every EMI and compare the total with your monthly income. If the total feels heavy, look at our post on what to do when personal loan interest is too high. You can also Check your options with BillCut to see if one structured EMI could help.

Where can you raise a complaint about a wrong EMI?

Ask the lender first for the statement and the schedule. RBI says you can approach its Ombudsman if there is no reply within 30 days or you are dissatisfied with the reply. It is also worth taking the chance to request your free full credit report once each calendar year and check that your loan is shown correctly.

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option.
