In SEBI’s own illustration, compensation runs from the day after funds should have been unblocked to the day they actually were.

Here is an illustrative example with a 10 day delay:

Illustrative application

Rs 100 a day

15% a year for 10 days

Compensation (higher figure)

Rs 15,000

Rs 1,000

Rs 61.64

Rs 1,000

Rs 5,00,000

Rs 1,000

Rs 2,054.79

Rs 2,054.79

To claim it, write first to your bank and the registrar with your application number and bank statement. If that does not work, SEBI’s SCORES complaint portal lets you file against the regulated entity, but investors must first take up the grievance with the entity concerned.

How do you avoid fake IPO allotment links?

Fake messages may offer a “guaranteed allotment”, ask you to log in through a link, or send a UPI collect request labelled as a refund. Use only the registrar, BSE or NSE websites that you type in yourself. Never approve a UPI request you did not start, because approving a collect request sends money out, it does not bring a refund in. BillCut’s guide to fake refund UPI scams shows common tricks, and you can report fraud on the National Cyber Crime portal or by calling 1930.

Should you use a loan or credit card to fund IPO bids?

It is usually a poor idea. SEBI’s investor guide asks you to use your own funds to apply. Borrowing means you pay interest even if you get no shares, and prices can list below the issue price. If a card bill or personal loan is already rolling over, the interest can grow faster than any listing gain, as BillCut’s piece on the credit card interest explosion explains.

If high interest dues are stopping you from saving for investments, it may help to see whether one structured EMI could cost less in total. Check your options with BillCut.

What should you do to check IPO allotment status?

Note the issue close date and the allotment date from the offer document.

Check the registrar’s website first, then BSE or NSE as a second check.

On T+2, confirm the shares in your demat account or the unblock in your bank account.

If money stays blocked, write to your bank and registrar, then use SCORES.

For how UPI mandates for IPO bids work, see BillCut’s guide on UPI for IPOs and bills.

How BillCut can help

BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender, and a switch only makes sense if the total cost after fees is lower.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check IPO allotment status online?

Go to the registrar’s website, the BSE website or the NSE website, select the IPO and enter your PAN or application number.
