If you get an award, you have 30 days to accept it or appeal. Your lender then has 30 days to comply.

What happens to your complaint after you file it?

Under the Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2026, in force since 1 July 2026 as per the RBI’s press release on the new scheme, your complaint moves through a set of stages. The RBI’s FAQs on RB-IOS 2026 describe them.

Stage

What happens

What you can do

Maintainability check

A complaint outside the scheme is closed with a written reason

Check the reason and whether another forum fits

Lender’s response

A maintainable complaint is sent to the bank or NBFC for its reply

Keep your own documents ready to counter it

Settlement or conciliation

The Ombudsman or Deputy Ombudsman may help both sides agree, sometimes in a meeting held in person or online

Attend and state the relief you want clearly

Award or rejection

If there is no settlement and a deficiency is found, an award may order remedial action, compensation or both

Accept within 30 days or appeal

Before any award, both sides get a reasonable chance to be heard. The Ombudsman looks at your complaint, the lender’s reply, the documents from both sides and the applicable RBI instructions.

How can you track your RBI Ombudsman complaint?

You can track the status on the RBI’s Complaints Management System at cms.rbi.org.in using your complaint number and mobile number. You can also call the contact centre on 14448 for help with the status. The CMS has handled complaints digitally since 2019, according to the RBI’s overview of its complaint system.

Respond to any request quickly, since a complaint not pursued with reasonable diligence may be rejected.

Why might the Ombudsman reject your complaint?

A complaint may be rejected with reasons. Common grounds in the FAQs include:

You did not complain to the lender first, or cannot show proof that you did.

The same grievance is pending before, or already decided by, a court, tribunal, arbitrator or the Ombudsman.

It is about the lender’s commercial judgment rather than a deficiency in service.

It needs elaborate documentary and oral evidence, which the Ombudsman process is not suited for.

You did not pursue it with reasonable diligence.

An appeal is available only against an award, so a rejection cannot be taken to the Appellate Authority. BillCut explains why digital receipts matter in disputes.

What can an RBI Ombudsman award include?

An award can direct the lender to fix the problem, pay compensation, or both. There is no limit on the amount in dispute. Separately, compensation can go up to Rs 30 lakh for consequential loss and up to Rs 3 lakh for loss of time, expenses, harassment and mental anguish.

Some disputes come with a rule that already fixes what the lender owes. For example, the RBI’s credit card Master Direction requires a card to be closed within 7 working days of a request once dues are paid, with a penalty of Rs 500 a day for delay.

Illustrative card closure delay

Figure

Days of delay beyond the 7 working day limit

12

Penalty at Rs 500 a day you could ask to be paid

Rs 6,000

These figures are illustrative. The final amount depends on the facts and what the Ombudsman decides.

An award fixes a specific wrong, but it does not reduce what you owe on the rest of your debt. If high interest card or loan dues are the bigger worry, moving them into one EMI may cost less, though a new loan brings its own fees and eligibility checks. Check your options with BillCut.

Should you accept the award or appeal it?

To accept, you send a letter accepting the award in full and final settlement within 30 days of receiving it. Once you accept, the lender must comply and tell the Ombudsman within 30 days of getting your letter, unless it appeals with prior approval.

If you disagree, you can appeal to the Appellate Authority within 30 days of receiving the award. A further 30 days may be allowed for sufficient reason.

Option

Benefit

Cost or risk

Accept the award

The lender must comply within 30 days

You settle the claim in full and final terms

Appeal the award

A higher authority reviews the decision

More time, and the outcome may not change

What should you do after filing an Ombudsman complaint?

Save the complaint number, the acknowledgement and the mobile number you used.

Keep copies of your complaint to the lender, its reply, statements and any receipts.

Check the CMS status regularly and reply to any request quickly.

Read the award carefully and note the 30 day dates for acceptance or appeal.

If the issue involves your credit report, check it later to confirm the correction. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender, and it only helps if the total cost after fees is lower.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my RBI Ombudsman complaint status?

Use the CMS portal at cms.rbi.org.in with your complaint number and mobile number, or call 14448 for help.

How long do I have to accept an RBI Ombudsman award?

You must send a letter of acceptance within 30 days of receiving the award, unless you file an appeal.

Can I appeal an RBI Ombudsman award?

Yes.
