What to do after home loan rejection comes down to six steps: stay calm, ask the lender for the reason, read your free credit report, fix errors, reduce your EMI load, and reapply only after something has changed. If you think the service was poor, there is also an RBI complaint route. Here is each step in order.

Step 1: Should you reapply straight away?

Not yet. CIBIL says too many loan enquiries may have a negative effect on your score, because they can suggest that your debt may rise. A second application with the same facts may give the same answer. Pause, find the cause, then act.

Step 2: How do you find out why it was rejected?

Ask the lender, preferably in writing, for the main reason. Lenders follow their own credit policy. CIBIL says the decision to grant a loan depends solely on the credit policy of the lender. We could not confirm on an RBI or CIBIL page that every lender must give a detailed reason, so treat it as a request, not a promise. Even a short answer helps. It can point to income, existing EMIs, documents or the credit report.

Step 3: Can you see your credit report for free?

Yes, once a year. RBI’s Credit Information Companies Directions entitle an individual to one free full credit report, including the credit score, once every calendar year from each credit information company. It is given electronically on request after authentication, and the link must be shown on the company’s website.

Read each account line. Check names, PAN, addresses, balances and overdue amounts.

Step 4: How do you fix errors on the report?

CIBIL’s loan rejections and disputes FAQ explains the process.

  • Lenders usually send data to CIBIL every 30 to 45 days, so a recent payment may not show yet.
  • If a payment is missing, ask the lender to report it. CIBIL cannot add missing information.
  • If the Date Reported is older than two months and the payment still does not show, raise a dispute.
  • CIBIL checks the dispute with the lender. It cannot change the report without the lender’s confirmation. It says resolution takes about 30 days, depending on the lender.

RBI’s directions also set a 30 day period for resolving a complaint about credit information, with compensation of Rs 100 per calendar day for delay. The directions share the time between the lender and the credit information company. Read the exact paragraph before you rely on it.

Step 5: What can you change before applying again?

CIBIL’s loan approval process page says lenders check steady income and employment, credit facility status, payment history and EMIs against salary. Match your fixes to the reason you found.

If the cause looks like You can try
High EMIs against income Reduce dues, ask for a smaller loan or add a co-applicant with a clean record
Overdue or defaulted account Clear it and ask the lender to update the report
Document mismatch Correct names, PAN and address across all papers
Wrong entry on the report Raise a dispute and wait for the update
Unsteady income Build a longer record before applying

Illustrative timeline: how long might the process take?

This is an illustrative sequence with made up dates. It is not a BillCut offer.

  1. Week 1: you request the reason and download your free report.
  2. Week 2: you spot a wrong balance and raise a dispute.
  3. Weeks 3 to 6: the dispute is checked and updated. Meanwhile you clear a small overdue card bill.
  4. Week 7: you reread the updated report and then reapply with a clearer file.

If high interest card or loan EMIs are what weigh on your file, Check your options with BillCut to see if moving them into one EMI is possible for you.

Step 6: What is the RBI complaint route?

RBI’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme FAQ sets the route. It is for deficiency in service by a regulated entity, such as a bank, an NBFC or a credit information company, and not for disagreeing with a lending decision. The FAQ lists a complaint about a commercial decision as one that is not maintained.

  1. First complain to the regulated entity.
  2. If there is no reply within 30 days, or you are unhappy with the reply, you can go to the Ombudsman.
  3. File within 90 days of the end of that period or the entity’s last reply, whichever is later.
  4. File on the CMS portal at cms.rbi.org.in, by email, or by post. The toll free number 14448 explains the process but does not take complaints.
  5. There is no fee.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply to another lender right after a rejection?

You can, but CIBIL says too many loan enquiries may hurt the score. It is usually wiser to find the cause first.

Am I entitled to a free credit report?

RBI’s directions give you one free full report, with the score, once every calendar year from each credit information company, on request and after authentication.

Will the lender explain the rejection?

You can ask. We could not confirm a rule on RBI or CIBIL pages that makes every lender give detailed reasons, so we do not state one.

How long does a CIBIL dispute take?

CIBIL says it takes about 30 days, depending on the lender, and that you get status emails every 7 days.

Can I complain to RBI about a rejected home loan?

You can complain about deficiency in service after first approaching the lender. RBI’s FAQ says complaints about commercial decisions are not maintainable.

Is there a fee for the RBI complaint?

No. RBI’s FAQ says there is no charge for filing or resolving complaints under the scheme.

Will a rejection lower my CIBIL score?

A rejection itself is not stated as a score factor on the pages we read. Enquiries from applications may affect it, as CIBIL notes.
