Settled vs closed in CIBIL is a difference of how an account ended. Closed means you repaid the full amount. Settled means the lender accepted less than the full amount owed. Lenders tend to view the two very differently when you apply for credit later.
What does each status mean on your credit report?
| Status | What happened | How CIBIL describes the view |
|---|---|---|
| Closed | The loan or card dues were paid in full. | Reported as closed, the normal end of an account. |
| Settled | The lender agreed to take a lesser amount than the complete amount payable. | CIBIL says lenders view settled as risky. |
This reading comes from CIBIL’s own explainer, Impact of Settled status on your CIBIL score. It describes a borrower whose bank accepted a settlement amount that was lesser than the amount due. Had the full amount been paid, the loan would have shown as closed.
How does a settled status affect future loans?
CIBIL’s page says lenders see a settled entry as a sign that a borrower did not meet a repayment obligation earlier, and may not meet one again. It gives an example where a settled personal loan led to a rejected education loan application. The page gives no numeric score impact, so no one can promise you a specific change in score.
A separate point comes from the RBI. Its framework for compromise settlements asks lenders to set a cooling period before giving fresh exposure to a borrower after a settlement. For exposures other than farm credit, that cooling period has a floor of 12 months, and a lender can set a longer one under its Board approved policy. The rule is in the RBI Framework for Compromise Settlements and Technical Write-offs. It governs what the lender does, so each lender’s own policy decides the rest.
How long does a settled status stay on the report?
We cannot give a period. The CIBIL pages we reviewed do not state how long a settled status remains on a report, and we will not guess. Ask your lender and CIBIL directly, and check your report for the current entry.
Can a settled status be changed to closed?
CIBIL’s page says to pay off the remaining balance as soon as you can and ask the bank to update the status. In its example, the borrower paid the rest, obtained a no objection certificate and raised a dispute, and the status moved to closed within 30 days. This is one case, not a promise.
CIBIL’s FAQ also says it cannot change data without confirmation from the lender, so the lender has to agree to the update. See the CIBIL FAQ on disputes. Lenders submit data every 30 to 45 days, so a fix can take time to show.
How do you raise a dispute about a wrong entry?
- Download a fresh report. It should be no more than 60 days old to start a dispute.
- Find the entry that looks wrong and gather proof, such as a closure letter or no objection certificate.
- Use the online dispute form in your CIBIL account.
- Track the status. Disputed fields show as under dispute.
CIBIL says that if a dispute is not resolved within 30 days, RBI mandated compensation applies at Rs 100 a day of delay. These steps and timelines are in the CIBIL dispute resolution guide.
What should you do before agreeing to a settlement?
- Ask in writing how the account will be reported once you pay: settled or closed.
- Check whether paying the full balance is possible, even in parts, to reach closed.
- Get a settlement letter and a no objection certificate after payment.
- Review your report a few weeks later to confirm the entry.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between settled and closed in CIBIL?
Closed means the dues were paid in full. Settled means the lender accepted less than the full amount owed.
Is settled better than closed for my score?
No. CIBIL says lenders view settled as risky. Closed after full payment is the cleaner outcome.
Will a settled loan stop me from getting a new loan?
Not always, but it can lead to rejections, as in CIBIL’s education loan example. Lenders decide using their own policies.
How long will settled show on my report?
We do not state a period because we could not confirm one on a CIBIL page. Ask your lender and check your report.
Does credit card settlement work the same way?
The same idea applies: paying less than the full amount owed can lead to a settled status. Ask the card issuer how it will report the account.
Can I turn settled into closed?
You can ask the lender to update it after paying the remaining balance. CIBIL cannot change data without the lender confirming it.
What proof should I keep after settling?
Keep the settlement letter, payment receipts and the no objection certificate. They help if you need to dispute an entry.
