Your CIBIL score can now change faster because weekly credit reporting started on 1 July 2026. Lenders must send updates to credit bureaus as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of every month, instead of fortnightly. Repayments show up sooner, and so do missed payments.
What is the weekly credit reporting rule?
The Reserve Bank of India issued ten sets of amendment directions on 4 December 2025 to move lenders from fortnightly to weekly reporting. Its press release on the amendment directions says lenders earlier reported “at fortnightly or shorter intervals”, and the change aims to make credit reports more recent and accurate.
The rule covers commercial banks, small finance banks, local area banks, regional rural banks, urban and rural co-operative banks, all India financial institutions, NBFCs, asset reconstruction companies and the credit bureaus themselves. In practice, almost every loan or credit card you hold is covered.
How does weekly credit reporting work?
The RBI’s amendment directions for commercial banks, in force from 1 July 2026, set four reporting dates each month.
| Reporting date | What the lender sends | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| 9th of the month | Changed accounts only | Within 4 calendar days |
| 16th of the month | Changed accounts only | Within 4 calendar days |
| 23rd of the month | Changed accounts only | Within 4 calendar days |
| Last day of the month | Full data file as on that date | By the 5th of the next month |
“Changed accounts” include new loans, closed loans, repayments, changes in outstanding balance, updated personal details and overdue accounts. Even an account where only the days past due has changed must be reported. The same dates apply to NBFCs under the NBFC amendment directions. Lenders and bureaus can also agree to update data more often.
What changed from the draft weekly reporting proposal?
The RBI’s September 2025 draft proposed a tighter schedule and an earlier start. The final rules gave lenders more time.
| Point | Draft, September 2025 | Final rule, December 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Start date | 1 April 2026 | 1 July 2026 |
| Weekly dates | 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th | 9th, 16th, 23rd |
| Time to submit weekly data | 2 calendar days | 4 calendar days |
| Month-end full file due | 3rd of next month | 5th of next month |
Why does your CIBIL score update faster now?
Your score is calculated from the data lenders send. When that data arrives every week instead of every fortnight, the bureau has a more current picture of your accounts. The amendment directions for credit bureaus also require them to send lenders a rejection report within 3 calendar days of receiving a file, and lenders must fix rejected data before or with their next submission.
This cuts both ways. A closed loan or a paid off card balance can appear sooner, which may help when you apply for new credit. A missed EMI can also appear sooner, so there is less time between a slip and a lender seeing it. Learn more about how credit bureaus work in India.
Weekly credit reporting: an example
The dates below are illustrative. Say you pay off a personal loan on 10 July 2026.
- The next reporting date is 16 July, so the closure is part of that weekly update.
- Your lender must send it to the bureaus by 20 July, four calendar days later.
- The bureau then processes the file, and your report can reflect the closure soon after.
Now say an EMI due on 5 July goes unpaid. The overdue account is part of the 9 July update, due by 13 July. A small delay you meant to clear later may already be on your report. See how a missed EMI compares with paying three days late.
If several EMIs and card dues are making it hard to pay every one on time, faster reporting means each slip shows up quickly. One structured EMI may be easier to track, but it can add fees or a longer tenure. Check your options with BillCut.
Will you get an alert when a default is reported?
Usually, yes. Under the RBI’s credit information reporting directions for commercial banks, lenders must send you an SMS or email alert when they report a default or days past due to the bureaus, where they have your mobile number or email ID. Keep your contact details updated with every lender so you do not miss these alerts.
What should you do under weekly credit reporting?
- Pay EMIs and card dues on or before the due date, since even a few days past due can now be reported within a week.
- Set up auto debit and keep enough balance a day or two before each due date.
- Check your credit report a few weeks after closing a loan to confirm it shows as closed.
- Keep your card utilisation low before applying for a loan. Here is how credit utilisation affects your score.
- Update your mobile number and email ID with each lender so you get reporting alerts.
- If you spot a wrong entry, raise it with the lender or bureau quickly, because data now moves to the bureaus faster.
How BillCut can help
BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender, and a new loan is itself reported to the bureaus.
Frequently asked questions
How often is the CIBIL score updated now?
Since 1 July 2026, lenders report credit data as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of each month, so your score can change roughly every week.
When did RBI weekly credit reporting start?
The rules were issued on 4 December 2025 and came into force on 1 July 2026.
What was the reporting frequency before weekly reporting?

Weekly data must be sent within 4 calendar days of the 9th, 16th and 23rd, and the month-end full file by the 5th of the next month.

It can show a repayment or closed loan sooner, but the score itself depends on your full repayment record, balances and credit mix.
