If you lost your job and cant pay your personal loan, you are not alone, and there are steps that can limit the damage. The most useful move is to talk to your lender before the first EMI is missed. Silence tends to make things harder. Below is a plain, step by step plan. It is general information and does not promise any result.

Step 1: Why should I look at the full picture first?

Before you call anyone, write down what you owe and what you have. Fear makes numbers feel bigger than they are. A one page list helps you speak clearly.

  • Every loan and card due, with EMI amount and due date
  • Savings, notice pay, and any other money coming in
  • Fixed costs such as rent, food, school fees and insurance

Step 2: Should I talk to my lender before I miss an EMI?

Yes. Call or write to the lender and explain that your income has stopped. Ask what options it can offer, such as a change in the EMI date or a revised repayment schedule. Whether it agrees is the lender’s decision, so ask for any new terms in writing and read them before you accept.

Our guide on how to negotiate with recovery teams has ideas on preparing for that call.

Step 3: What happens to my credit record if I miss payments?

Payment history is a core input to your score. CIBIL states that making late payments or defaulting on your EMIs has a negative impact on your score. Lenders also report data to the bureau in cycles, so changes can take time to show up.

Step 4: Can I check my own credit report for free?

Yes. RBI directed credit information companies to give each individual one free full credit report, including the score, once per calendar year. Check it now, so you know what lenders see and can spot errors. If you find a mistake, raise it with the lender that reported it.

Step 5: Can I pay part of the loan, or close it early?

If you have some savings or a final payout, part payment can reduce what you owe. RBI’s directions for NBFCs say that, for floating rate personal loans, borrowers may prepay in part or in full at any point during the tenor. Charges on fixed rate loans depend on the lender’s policy, so check your loan agreement before you pay.

What are my rights if the lender starts recovery calls?

You still owe the dues, but you are also entitled to respectful treatment. The same NBFC directions bar intimidation, public humiliation, threatening or anonymous calls, and intruding on the privacy of your family, and restrict calls before 8 a.m. and after 7 p.m. Keep a log of any call that crosses the line. Our guide on borrowing after job loss covers what to know before taking on new credit.

If the lender does not resolve a complaint, RBI’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme lets you escalate. Per the scheme FAQ, you must first approach the lender, and you can go to the Ombudsman after 30 days with no reply. A qualified lawyer can advise you if you receive a legal notice.

Illustrative example of a job loss plan

This is an illustrative example with round, made-up numbers. Ravi has a personal loan EMI that takes a large share of his monthly pay. After a layoff, he lists his dues, calls the lender in week one, and asks for a revised schedule for a few months. He cuts non-essential spending and checks his free credit report. Whether the lender agrees depends on its policy and his record.

When might consolidating dues help?

If you have several dues, such as cards and a personal loan, managing many dates can be hard. Combining them into one structured EMI may simplify things once you have income again, but it only makes sense if the new EMI is affordable. Eligibility is decided by the lender, and a recent job loss can affect it. Our guide on top ways to improve your CIBIL score covers rebuilding later.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop paying my EMI if I lose my job?

Do not stop without talking to the lender. Missed payments can hurt your credit record. Ask early about options and get any change in writing.

Will losing my job reduce my credit score?

CIBIL lists payment history, utilisation, history length, credit mix and new credit as inputs. Missed or late payments have a negative impact.

Can the lender change my EMI because I have no income?

It may, but that is the lender’s decision. Ask what it can offer and read any new terms before you agree.

Can I prepay my personal loan to reduce the burden?

RBI’s NBFC directions allow part or full prepayment of floating rate personal loans. Charges on fixed rate loans follow the lender’s policy, so check your agreement.

Is it legal for agents to call me many times a day?

The NBFC directions bar persistent calling and calls before 8 a.m. or after 7 p.m. Keep a record and complain in writing if it happens.

Where can I get my credit report for free?

Credit information companies must give one free full report each calendar year, including the score, under an RBI direction.

Should I take a new loan to pay my old one?

Only if the new EMI is affordable without a regular income. Compare total cost first, and consider talking to a qualified financial adviser.
