An income tax refund reissue request is how you ask the Income Tax Department to send your refund again after the first attempt failed. You raise it on the e-Filing portal at incometax.gov.in. This guide follows the steps on the portal help page for refund reissue, checked on 2 November 2026.

When can you raise a refund reissue request?

The portal describes this facility for registered users who have a refund failure after filing a return. The Department’s own refund reissue page says a refund is issued only to a pre-validated bank account. It also says you can raise the request after the processing centre (CPC) communicates the failure.

The help page does not list the reasons a refund can fail. So do not assume a cause. Read the message you received from the Department and act on what it says.

What do you need before you start?

The portal lists four prerequisites.

  • A registered e-Filing user ID and password.
  • An Income Tax Return that has been filed, with a refund failure.
  • A validated bank account on the portal.
  • One way to verify: an Aadhaar-registered mobile number, a valid DSC registered with e-Filing, or an EVC generated through your bank account, demat account or net banking.

What are the steps to request a refund reissue?

These are the steps as the portal describes them.

  1. Log in to the e-Filing portal.
  2. On the Dashboard, go to Services and click Refund Reissue.
  3. Click Create Refund Reissue Request.
  4. Select the record you want and click Continue.
  5. Select the bank account for the refund and click Proceed to Verification. Only validated accounts appear here. To use another account, add and validate it first.
  6. On the e-Verify page, choose a verification option and click Continue.
  7. After successful verification, you see a success message and a Transaction ID. Note it down. A confirmation also goes to your registered email and mobile number.
  8. To check progress later, click View Refund Reissue Request.

The Department’s other page describes the same flow slightly differently. It asks you to select the assessment year for which the refund failed, then review your bank details and submit. The screens can change, so follow what you see on the portal.

Which account details matter most?

Item What the portal says
Bank account Only validated accounts are shown for the refund
New account Add it through the Add Bank Account function first
Verification Required before the request is accepted
Proof of request Transaction ID, plus email and mobile confirmation

Illustrative example: Asha filed her return and her refund failed. She adds and validates her bank account on the portal, creates the reissue request, e-verifies with her Aadhaar-registered mobile number and saves the Transaction ID. This is only an example to show the order of steps.

What should you check before you submit?

  • Your return is filed and the Department has told you the refund failed.
  • The bank account you want is already validated, or you have added and validated it.
  • Your Aadhaar-linked mobile, DSC or net banking access is ready for e-verification.
  • You have picked the correct record or assessment year for the failed refund.

Taking a minute for these checks can save you from repeating the process. Keep a screenshot of the success message too.

Why does the Transaction ID matter?

The Transaction ID is your proof that the request was made and verified. Quote it if you contact the helpline about your refund. The portal also sends a confirmation to your registered email and mobile number, so keep those details current. If you change your phone number or email, update them on the portal first.

How can you avoid a second failure?

The portal says only validated accounts appear for a refund. So choose an account that is validated on the portal and check the details shown. If you are unsure about an account, ask your bank before you submit.

How long does a reissue take?

The portal’s help page does not state any timeline for processing a reissue request. So there is no date to plan around. Use View Refund Reissue Request to follow the status. The e-Filing portal home page also lists helpline numbers for refund and processing queries. For how interest on a delayed refund works, see the Department’s page on section 244A of the Income-tax Act, 1961.

How can you stay safe while waiting for a refund?

Raise the request only through the official portal. Do not share OTPs or bank details with anyone who calls or messages about your refund. Our post on fake refund and UPI scams explains common tricks. If you want to understand the filing side, read how to file income tax online in India. For paying tax and government fees by UPI, see UPI for tax and government fees. And for planning deductions before year end, see tax saving investment options under 80C.

Should you count on a refund in your debt plan?

Because no timeline is stated, it is safer not to count on a refund date when you plan EMIs or card payments. If high interest dues are making your month hard, look at your options early rather than waiting on a refund.
