If you want to know how to reduce personal loan EMI burden, you have five main routes: pay part of the loan early, stretch the tenure, ask about a rate change, move the loan through a balance transfer, or combine several dues into one. Each one lowers the monthly outgo in a different way, and each has a cost. This guide compares them so you can decide with the full picture.

What are the main ways to lower a personal loan EMI?

OptionWhat changesMain trade-off
Part prepaymentOutstanding principal fallsNeeds spare cash, lender rules on charges apply
Longer tenureEMI falls, loan lasts longerMore total interest over the loan
Rate change or switchInterest cost may movePossible switching charges
Balance transferLoan moves to a new lenderNew fees, fresh credit check
ConsolidationSeveral dues become one EMILonger repayment can raise total cost

Does part prepayment reduce the burden?

It can. Paying a lump sum lowers the principal on which interest is charged. Depending on what you agree with the lender, you can keep the EMI the same and finish sooner, or ask for a lower EMI.

The RBI direction on pre-payment charges says a regulated lender shall not levy pre-payment charges on floating rate loans given to individuals for purposes other than business. It applies to loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. For other loans, any charge follows the lender’s approved policy, and for term loans it must be based on the amount being prepaid. Charges must be disclosed in the sanction letter and loan agreement.

Many personal loans carry a fixed rate, so read your own agreement. The rule is in the RBI pre-payment charges directions.

What happens if I extend the tenure?

A longer tenure spreads the same principal over more instalments, so each EMI is smaller. You pay interest for more months, so the total cost usually rises.

For floating rate EMI loans, RBI requires lenders to offer a choice when the rate resets. You can increase the EMI, lengthen the tenure while keeping the EMI unchanged, or use a mix of both. You can also prepay in part or in full at any point in the residual tenor. The lender must send quarterly statements showing principal and interest recovered, the EMI, the number of EMIs left and the annualised rate. Details are in the RBI FAQ on reset of floating interest rate.

Can I switch from floating to fixed?

RBI says lenders must offer a fixed rate option for the remaining loan under their board approved policy. You may be allowed to switch back, and the lender sets how many switches are permitted. Lenders may charge for switching, and such charges must be board approved and disclosed in the sanction letter. Ask for the charge in writing.

Is a balance transfer or consolidation worth considering?

These two options suit people with high interest dues or several EMIs due on different dates. A balance transfer moves an outstanding loan to another lender, ideally at a lower cost. Consolidation merges several dues into a single EMI.

Before you apply, compare the full cost on both sides:

  • Any pre-payment charge on the old loan, as set out in your agreement
  • Processing fees and other charges on the new loan
  • Total interest over the full new tenure, not only the new EMI
  • Whether the lower EMI comes only from a longer tenure

Each loan or card application creates an enquiry, because the lender accesses your credit report. CIBIL explains that your score reflects the Accounts and Enquiries sections of your report. See the CIBIL page on understanding your credit score and report. So apply to a lender only after you have narrowed your choices.

An illustrative comparison

The numbers below are illustrative only. They are not BillCut offers, and real figures depend on your lender and agreement.

CaseMonthly EMIRemaining monthsNote
TodayRs 15,00030Total outgo Rs 4,50,000
Tenure stretchedRs 12,00042Total outgo Rs 5,04,000

The EMI is Rs 3,000 lower, but the total outgo is Rs 54,000 higher in this example.

What should I check first if I am already struggling?

Start with your loan statement and sanction letter. Note the rate type, the remaining tenure, any prepayment charges and your due dates. Then list all other EMIs and card dues. Aim for a monthly outgo you can pay on time. Be careful with paying less than the full amount to close a loan: CIBIL explains that such an account shows as settled rather than closed, which lenders treat as a risk signal.

BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender. It is one of several routes to a lower monthly burden, and not the right one for every borrower.

Frequently asked questions

Which option lowers the EMI the most?

Extending the tenure usually lowers the EMI the most, but it also raises the total interest you pay. Compare the total cost, not only the monthly figure.

Can my lender charge me for part prepayment?

For floating rate loans to individuals for non business purposes sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026, RBI says regulated lenders shall not levy pre-payment charges. For other loans, the lender’s approved policy applies and charges must be disclosed in the loan documents.

Do all personal loans reset when rates change?

No. The reset rules apply to EMI based personal loans on a floating rate. Check your agreement to see whether your loan is floating or fixed.

What choices must a lender give at a rate reset?

RBI requires lenders to let you raise the EMI, lengthen the tenure, or combine both, and to allow part or full prepayment during the remaining tenor. A fixed rate option must also be offered.

Will a balance transfer affect my credit report?

Applying creates an enquiry on your report, because the lender accesses it. CIBIL says your score reflects the Accounts and Enquiries sections.

Is consolidation the same as a balance transfer?

Not exactly. A balance transfer moves a loan to another lender. Consolidation combines several dues into one EMI. They can overlap in practice, so ask how a given offer is structured.

What if I cannot pay this month?

Speak to your lender early about restructuring or a tenure change, and check any charges in writing. Do not pay anyone who promises to clear your loan for a fee.
