IPO scams India investors report usually follow a pattern: a stranger promises allotment, a sure gain or inside access, and asks you to pay or install something. No genuine intermediary can promise allotment. This checklist covers how to apply safely, what to avoid and where to complain. BillCut is a debt platform, not an investment adviser, so this is safety education and not a view on any issue.

How do IPO scams usually work?

  • A WhatsApp or Telegram group claims it can get you allotment for a fee.
  • A caller or an app asks you to send money to a personal account or a UPI ID.
  • A tip sheet quotes unofficial grey market chatter and pushes you to act fast.
  • A fake app shows made up allotment results and asks for more money to release shares.

SEBI cautions investors to be highly suspicious of any offer of assured high returns and to be sceptical of an investment that regularly gives positive returns whatever the market does. Allotment is decided by the method in the offer document and approved by the exchange, so no one can buy it for you.

How should you apply for an IPO safely?

  1. Apply only through your own bank or a SEBI registered broker, using your own bank account and demat account.
  2. Use ASBA, where the money stays blocked in your own account and is not paid to anyone. SEBI explains that the amount is debited only on allotment.
  3. Read the offer document for dates, the registrar and the terms. Facts should come from the offer document, the exchange or SEBI.
  4. Check that the intermediary is registered. SEBI says it is illegal to act as an investment adviser without SEBI registration.
  5. Check SEBI’s official pages for the current guidance on payment handles for registered intermediaries before you pay anyone.

The SEBI due diligence page also advises you to analyse risk and return and to check fundamentals before investing. It warns against luring schemes.

What are the red flags?

Red flag Why it matters
Promise of allotment Allotment follows the offer document method, so promises are false
Payment to a personal account Genuine bids use your own bank block
Pressure to act today Scammers use time pressure to stop you checking
Unregistered adviser or group SEBI says only registered advisers may advise
Trouble taking money out SEBI lists this as a warning sign of a Ponzi scheme

How do fake apps and WhatsApp groups trap people?

They copy the look of known apps, show fake gains and ask for fees to withdraw. SEBI has a page titled Beware of Fake Trading App Scam on its investor website. Do not install apps from links sent in chats. Download only from your broker’s official page. Do not share OTPs, UPI PINs or screen access. For more on payment tricks see simple UPI safety steps and phishing scams in India.

What should you do if you already paid?

  1. Stop paying. Do not send money to recover money.
  2. Tell your bank at once and ask it to flag the payment.
  3. Call the cyber fraud helpline 1930 and report on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. A PIB release describes 1930 as a helpline for victims of online financial fraud.
  4. Keep screenshots, numbers, UPI IDs and receipts.

Where can you complain?

For a SEBI registered entity or a listed company, use SEBI SCORES. Take it up first with the entity, as SCORES advises. SEBI also runs a toll free helpline on 1800 266 7575 or 1800 22 7575, as listed on its investor support page. The helpline does not give legal opinion or investment advice. For cyber fraud, use 1930 and the cybercrime portal. See also NPCI alerts on UPI scams.

What about debt taken to chase a quick gain?

Borrowing to apply, or paying a scammer from a credit card, can leave you with dues and no shares. If that has happened, list what you owe and speak to your lender early. This is general information and not advice on any issue.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone guarantee IPO allotment?

No. Allotment follows the method in the offer document and is approved by the exchange. Any promise is a red flag.

What is the cyber fraud helpline number?

A PIB release gives 1930 as the helpline for online financial fraud. Reports can also be made on the national cybercrime portal.

Where do I complain about a broker or registrar?

First write to the entity, then file on SEBI SCORES. The SEBI helpline can guide you on how to file.

Is unofficial grey market chatter a reliable fact?

No. It is not part of any offer document or exchange data, so do not use it to take a decision.
