In a gold loan vs personal loan comparison, a gold loan usually carries a lower interest rate because your jewellery secures it. A personal loan usually costs more but puts no asset at risk. The cheaper choice depends on the rate, the fees, how you repay, and whether you could bear losing your gold at auction.
How is a gold loan different from a personal loan?
A gold loan is secured: you pledge jewellery or coins and the lender holds them until you repay. A personal loan is unsecured, so the lender relies on your income and credit history instead. That difference drives the rate, the speed and the risk.
| Feature | Gold loan | Personal loan |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral | Gold or silver jewellery, ornaments or coins | None |
| How much you get | Capped at 75% to 85% of your gold’s value for consumption loans | Based on income, credit score and lender policy |
| Interest rate | Usually lower, as the loan is secured | Usually higher, as the lender takes more risk |
| Repayment | EMIs, or a single bullet payment within 12 months for consumption loans | Monthly EMIs |
| Credit score role | Smaller, though you must still repay | Central to approval and pricing |
| If you default | Your jewellery can be auctioned | Your credit score suffers and the lender can pursue recovery |
The gold loan limits come from the Reserve Bank of India’s Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025, which commercial banks other than payments banks, co-operative banks and NBFCs had to follow by 1 April 2026. The maximum loan to value is 85% up to Rs 2.5 lakh, 80% above Rs 2.5 lakh up to Rs 5 lakh, and 75% above Rs 5 lakh.
Gold loan vs personal loan: a worked example
Say you need Rs 2,00,000 for 12 months. The rates below are illustrative only, not quotes from any lender, and the example ignores processing fees, which you should add from each lender’s Key Fact Statement.
| Illustrative option | Monthly payment | Total interest | Eligible gold value needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold loan, 10% a year, EMIs | Rs 17,583 | Rs 10,998 | At least Rs 2,35,294 |
| Gold loan, 10% a year, bullet repayment | None, Rs 2,20,000 due at month 12 | Rs 20,000 | At least Rs 2,58,824 |
| Personal loan, 14% a year, EMIs | Rs 17,957 | Rs 15,489 | None |
The gold loan with EMIs saves about Rs 4,491 in interest in this example. The bullet option costs more than the EMI version because you hold the full Rs 2,00,000 for the whole year, and it needs more gold, since for bullet loans LTV is measured against the total you repay at maturity.
The bullet option also concentrates the risk. If Rs 2,20,000 is hard to arrange in month 12, renewal is only possible after paying the interest due and if the loan stays within LTV limits. Otherwise your gold may move towards auction.
What is the real risk of a gold loan?
The main risk is losing jewellery that may carry family value no money can replace. The new rules add protections, but they do not remove that risk:
- You must get adequate notice to repay before an auction starts.
- The reserve price must be at least 90% of the gold’s current value, or 85% after two failed auctions.
- Any surplus after your dues must be refunded within seven working days of the lender receiving the full proceeds.
- A shortfall can still be recovered from you.
Gold prices also matter. The lender must keep your loan within the LTV limit throughout, and what it does if prices fall depends on its own policy. On the positive side, once you repay in full, it must return your gold within seven working days or pay you Rs 5,000 for each day of delay it causes.
If you are considering pledging gold to clear high interest card dues or several EMIs, it may be worth checking whether one structured EMI without putting jewellery at risk would cost less in total. Check your options with BillCut.
What is the real cost of a personal loan?
A personal loan usually has a higher rate, and the gap grows with tenure. BillCut explains why personal loans cost more in emergencies and why tenure choice matters.
Both loan types come with protections. Under the Reserve Bank of India’s KFS circular, retail term loans get a Key Fact Statement with the annual percentage rate and repayment schedule. Late payment can only attract a disclosed penal charge, not penal interest, under the RBI penal charges rules. NBFC lenders must also follow the Fair Practices Code, which bars harassment such as calls at odd hours during recovery.
What should you do before choosing?
- Get the KFS from at least two gold loan lenders and two personal loan lenders, and compare the APR, not just the headline rate.
- Add all fees to the total cost, using an example like the one above.
- Choose EMIs over bullet repayment if a lump sum at the end may be hard to arrange.
- Ask each gold loan lender how it values gold and what it does if prices fall.
- Pledge only jewellery you could bear to lose. BillCut’s guide to secured vs unsecured loans covers this trade-off.
- If a lender breaks the rules, complain in writing, then escalate through the RBI’s ombudsman and complaints system.
How BillCut can help
BillCut is a balance transfer and debt reduction platform. It works with lending partners to help eligible borrowers move high interest dues, such as credit card balances and personal loan EMIs, into one structured EMI. BillCut earns from helping borrowers refinance, so it has an interest in this option. Approval and terms depend on the partner lender, and a switch only makes sense if the total cost after fees is lower. If your current loan rate feels high, see what to do when personal loan interest is too high.
Frequently asked questions
Is a gold loan cheaper than a personal loan?
A gold loan usually has a lower interest rate because it is secured by your jewellery. The total cost still depends on fees, repayment type and tenure, so compare the APR in each Key Fact Statement.
Which is safer, a gold loan or a personal loan?
A personal loan puts no asset at risk, while missing gold loan payments can lead to your jewellery being auctioned. Missing either can still hurt your credit score.
How much gold loan can I get on Rs 2 lakh worth of gold?
For a consumption loan up to Rs 2.5 lakh, the RBI caps LTV at 85%, so up to about Rs 1,70,000 on Rs 2 lakh of eligible gold value with EMI repayment.
Does a gold loan need a good credit score?
Credit score usually matters less because the loan is secured, but lenders must assess repayment capacity when your total gold loans exceed Rs 2.5 lakh.
What is a bullet repayment gold loan?
You pay interest and principal together at the end instead of monthly EMIs. For consumption loans, the tenure is capped at 12 months.
What happens to my gold if I cannot repay?
The lender must give you notice to repay before an auction, set a reserve price of at least 90% of current value, and refund any surplus within seven working days.
Can I use a gold loan to pay off credit card debt?
You can, and it may cut interest, but you risk losing your jewellery if repayment slips. Compare it with unsecured options that do not need collateral.
