A debt consolidation loan online lets you apply for a new loan through a website or app and use it to pay off several older dues. The idea is to replace many payments with one EMI. It only helps if the new loan costs less overall and the lender is genuine. This guide walks through the steps to apply safely.
What is a debt consolidation loan online?
It is a loan taken to clear other debts, such as credit card dues or personal loan EMIs. You apply digitally and sign online. You are left with one EMI to track.
Step 1: Check that the lender is regulated
Only banks and non-banking finance companies registered with the RBI should lend to you. Under the RBI digital lending directions, loans must be disbursed into the borrower’s own bank account, and repayment must go straight to the lender’s account. Details are in the RBI Digital Lending Directions, 2025.
Check the lender’s name in the loan agreement, not just the app name.
Step 2: Read the Key Facts Statement
Before you sign, the lender must give you a Key Facts Statement, called a KFS. The RBI circular says it must be in a language you understand and must include an APR computation sheet and a repayment schedule. APR is the yearly cost of credit, and it counts interest plus other charges. See the RBI circular on Key Facts Statement.
- Check the loan amount, tenure and EMI.
- Check the APR, not just the interest rate.
- Check every fee, including processing and any prepayment charge.
Step 3: Compare the total cost
A lower EMI can hide a higher total cost. Compare what you pay in total on current dues with the new EMI times the tenure, plus all fees.
Here is an illustrative example. The rates below are hypothetical example rates used only for maths. They are not a BillCut offer and not a quote from any lender. Assume two dues of Rs 2,00,000 and Rs 1,50,000 at 36 percent and 42 percent a year, each repaid over 24 months. Assume a new loan of Rs 3,50,000 at a hypothetical 16 percent a year with a 2 percent processing fee of Rs 7,000.
| Option | Monthly payment | Total paid |
|---|---|---|
| Keep both dues, 24 months | Rs 21,150 (11,809 plus 9,341) | Rs 5,07,610 |
| New loan, 36 months | Rs 12,305 | Rs 4,42,979 plus Rs 7,000 fee |
| New loan, 48 months | Rs 9,919 | Rs 4,76,117 plus Rs 7,000 fee |
EMIs were computed with the standard formula in Python. Here the longer tenure gives a lower EMI but a higher total.
Step 4: Check prepayment terms
The RBI pre-payment charges directions say regulated lenders cannot charge pre-payment penalties on floating-rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes, for loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. Fixed-rate loans can still carry charges, and they must be disclosed in the sanction letter and agreement. Ask which type your loan is. Our guide on early loan prepayment charges explains more.
Step 5: Watch for advance fee scams
Warning signs include:
- A person asks you to pay a fee before the loan is approved or disbursed.
- The money is requested to a personal account or a wallet.
- You are pushed to decide within minutes.
Read our note on fake loan and settlement scams. If you face a problem, you can register a grievance with the National Consumer Helpline, which forwards complaints to the company or regulator. It does not guarantee a remedy.
Step 6: Think about your credit score
Each application can lead to a credit check. CIBIL notes that frequent new credit enquiries can lower a score. Our guide on loan processing fees helps with fee checks.
Is consolidation right for you?

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to apply for a debt consolidation loan online?
It can be, if the lender is a bank or NBFC regulated by the RBI, you receive a Key Facts Statement, and money moves only between your bank account and the lender. Never pay a fee to a person before approval.
What is a Key Facts Statement?
It is a document the lender must give you before the loan contract. It shows the loan terms, APR, fees and repayment schedule, per the RBI circular on Key Facts Statement.
What is APR on a loan?
APR is the yearly cost of credit to you. The RBI circular says it covers interest and other charges linked to the loan, so it is a better comparison figure than the interest rate alone.
Can a lender ask for money before approving my loan?
Be careful. Asking for a fee to a personal account before disbursal is a common scam sign. Under the RBI digital lending directions, lending app fees are paid by the lender and not collected from you by the app.
Can I exit a digital loan after taking it?
The RBI directions give borrowers a cooling-off period to exit a digital loan by repaying the principal and proportionate APR. The lender sets the period, and it is at least one day. Check your KFS.
Will a consolidation loan affect my credit score?
Applying can lead to credit enquiries, and CIBIL notes that frequent new credit enquiries can lower a score. Paying the new EMI on time is what helps your record over time.
Where can I complain if something goes wrong?
Start with the lender grievance officer named in your KFS. You can also register a grievance with the National Consumer Helpline, which forwards it to the company or regulator.
