A debt consolidation loan for bad credit is a new loan used to pay off several existing dues, so you repay one EMI instead of many. It can be available even with a weak score, but the terms may be tighter, and it only helps if the total cost of the new loan is lower than what you pay now.
What is a debt consolidation loan for bad credit?
You take one new loan and use it to close credit card balances, personal loans or other EMIs. After that, you pay one monthly instalment. Bad credit is not an official term. It usually means a score lenders see as risky, or a record with late payments.
If the new loan stretches the tenure a lot, you can pay more in total even when the monthly amount looks smaller. For a wider view, read our guide on how to stop EMI overload.
How do lenders judge a borrower with a low score?
CIBIL says its score ranges from 300 to 900 and that a score above 700 is generally considered good. Lenders read your credit report, which has an Accounts section showing payment records and an Enquiries section showing recent applications. Lenders also weigh income and current EMIs.
You can check your own score without hurting it. CIBIL states that checking your own credit score does not affect it, and that a free score and report can be refreshed once a year. Look for errors or unfamiliar enquiries before you apply. See also how a credit score affects loan approvals.
Does consolidation actually save money? A worked example
It depends on the blended cost of your current dues against the all in cost of the new loan. This illustrative example uses made up figures. They are not a BillCut offer or a quote.
| Existing due (illustrative) | Amount | Interest per year |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card balance | Rs 1,00,000 | 40 percent |
| Loan app dues | Rs 50,000 | 30 percent |
| Personal loan | Rs 1,50,000 | 18 percent |
The total is Rs 3,00,000. Yearly interest would be Rs 40,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 27,000, or Rs 82,000 in all. That is a blended rate of about 27.3 percent. A consolidation loan helps only if its annual percentage rate, with every charge included, is clearly below that figure and the tenure is not stretched too far.
What are the main options if your score is low?
- Unsecured loan: No asset is pledged, but approval and pricing lean on your score and income.
- Secured loan: An asset backs the loan, which may ease approval, but you risk the asset if you miss payments. Our note on secured versus unsecured loans explains the trade off.
- Co-applicant or guarantor: A stronger profile alongside yours can help. CIBIL notes that if the principal borrower defaults, a guarantor’s credit score is affected too.
What should you check before you sign?
The RBI requires lenders to give a Key Facts Statement before a retail loan contract is signed. It summarises the loan in simple language and includes the annual percentage rate, which covers the interest rate and all other charges. The RBI directions add that charges not mentioned in the statement cannot be levied during the loan term without your explicit consent.
Will closing your old loans cost you anything?
Possibly. Under the RBI pre-payment charges directions, lenders cannot levy pre-payment charges on floating rate loans given to individuals for non business purposes, for loans sanctioned or renewed on or after 1 January 2026. Other loans may carry charges as set in the loan agreement. Check each old loan first, and see our guide on loan prepayment charges.
If you take a digital loan, what protection do you have?
The RBI Digital Lending Directions, 2025 give borrowers a cooling off period of at least one day, set by the lender. You can exit by repaying the principal and the proportionate annual percentage rate without penalty, though a disclosed one time processing fee may be kept.
How can you improve your chances while you wait?
Pay every EMI on time, avoid new applications for a while and correct any errors on your report. See our post on improving your credit score. None of this assures approval.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a debt consolidation loan for bad credit?
It is possible, but approval depends on the lender and its policy. Lenders look at credit history, income and existing EMIs together, so a lower score does not always mean a refusal, though terms may be tighter.
What credit score counts as bad for a consolidation loan?
There is no single official cut off for bad credit. CIBIL says a score above 700 is generally considered good, so scores below that may see stricter checks. Each lender sets its own rules.
Will a debt consolidation loan hurt my credit score?
A new application creates an enquiry on your report, which can affect the score. Paying the new EMI on time can support your record over time, but nothing is certain.
Is debt consolidation the same as debt settlement?
No. Consolidation replaces several dues with one loan that is repaid in full. Settlement means agreeing with a lender to close a due for less than the full amount.
Can I consolidate credit card dues and personal loans together?
Often yes. BillCut handles all types of debt, including credit card balances, personal loans and other EMIs, but eligibility and terms depend on the partner lender.
What should I check before I sign a consolidation loan?
Check the Key Facts Statement: the annual percentage rate, all charges, the tenure and the total repayment. Also check early closure charges on your old loans.
Should I use a guarantor or a secured loan to improve my chances?
Both can help approval but add risk. A default by the main borrower affects a guarantor’s score too, and a secured loan puts your asset at risk.
