Credit Score Not Updated After Loan Closure? Here Is What to Check

If your credit score has not updated after loan closure, your lender may not have reported it yet, or the bureau may have rejected the data. Since 1 July 2026, lenders report changes weekly, so a closure should usually reach the bureaus within a couple of weeks. If it still shows open after that, you can raise a complaint with clear timelines.

How soon should a closed loan show on your credit report?

The Reserve Bank of India moved lenders from fortnightly to weekly reporting, according to its December 2025 press release. Under the RBI’s amendment directions for commercial banks, in force from 1 July 2026, lenders report data as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of each month.

Accounts where your relationship with the lender has ended are part of these weekly updates. Weekly data is due within 4 calendar days of each date, and the month-end full file by the 5th of the next month.

You close the loan between Next reporting date Lender must submit by
1st and 9th 9th 13th
10th and 16th 16th 20th
17th and 23rd 23rd 27th
24th and month end Last day of the month 5th of next month

After that, the bureau has to process the file, so your report may take a few more days to change.

Why has your credit score not updated after loan closure?

Most causes can be fixed once you know which one applies.

Possible reason What to check
The next reporting date has not passed Use the table above to see when your lender should report
The bureau rejected the lender’s data Ask your lender whether its submission was accepted
A small balance is still open Check for unpaid charges, interest or a last EMI that bounced
You checked a different bureau Lenders may report to more than one bureau, so compare reports
The closure is reported but your score barely moved Closing a loan does not always raise a score

On rejected data, the RBI’s amendment directions for credit bureaus require a bureau to share rejection reports with the lender within 3 calendar days. The lender must fix and resubmit the data before or with its next reporting date. Learn how the four credit bureaus in India differ.

What are your rights if the closure is not reported?

The Reserve Bank of India’s credit information reporting directions for commercial banks set firm timelines once you complain.

  • You can complain to the lender or to the bureau.
  • The lender has 21 days and the bureau the remaining 9 days, so the complaint should be resolved within 30 calendar days of filing.
  • If it is not, you are entitled to compensation of Rs 100 per calendar day of delay, shared by the lender and bureau in proportion to their delay.
  • Compensation is credited within 5 working days of resolution, to bank or UPI details you provide.
  • If your request is rejected, the lender must tell you why.

If compensation is wrongly denied, you can escalate through the RBI’s ombudsman and complaints system.

Credit score not updated after loan closure: an example

The dates below are illustrative. Say you pay your last personal loan EMI on 25 August 2026.

  • The next reporting date is 31 August, and the full file is due by 5 September.
  • By 15 September your report still shows the loan as active, so you file a complaint with the lender that day.
  • The lender’s 21 days run to 6 October, and the 30 day limit ends on 15 October.
  • If the correction is made on 25 October, that is 10 days late, so compensation would be about Rs 1,000 in this example.

An active loan that you have already repaid can make your debt look higher when you apply for new credit, which may mean a rejection or a higher rate. See why loans go missing from credit reports and how to spot it.

If you are closing one loan to make room for paying down other high interest dues, one structured EMI may be easier to manage, though it can add fees or a longer tenure. Check your options with BillCut.

What should you do if your loan still shows as active?

  1. Get a closure letter or no dues certificate from the lender, and keep the final payment proof.
  2. Wait for the next reporting date and a few days of bureau processing before checking again.
  3. Check your report from each bureau, not only one. Here is why it is worth taking time to review your credit report.
  4. Ask the lender in writing whether the closure was reported and accepted.
  5. Raise a dispute with the bureau, attaching the closure letter, and note the filing date.
  6. If 30 days pass without a fix, ask for the compensation due, then escalate if refused.

For secured loans from NBFCs, the RBI’s Fair Practices Code for NBFCs also requires the lender to release securities once you repay all dues.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a closed loan to show on CIBIL?

Lenders now report weekly, so a closure is usually sent to the bureau within about two weeks, plus a few days for the bureau to process it.

Why does my closed loan still show as active?

The lender may not have reported it yet, the bureau may have rejected the data, or a small balance such as unpaid charges may still be open.

Who should I complain to if my credit report is wrong?

You can complain to the lender or to the credit bureau, and keep the closure letter and payment proof ready.

How long does a credit report correction take?

Under the Reserve Bank of India’s rules for banks, a complaint should be resolved within 30 calendar days of filing.

Can I get compensation for a delayed credit report correction?

Yes. If a complaint is not resolved within 30 calendar days, you are entitled to Rs 100 for each day of delay, shared by the lender and bureau.

Will my score go up right after closing a loan?

Not always. The closure updates your report, but your score depends on your full record, so it may rise slightly, stay similar or even dip.

What if the lender rejects my correction request?

The lender must tell you the reason, and if you think compensation was wrongly denied you can escalate to the RBI ombudsman.
