A credit line on UPI is a pre-sanctioned borrowing limit from your bank that you can spend directly through a UPI app, instead of paying from your account balance. Your bank sets the limit, the repayment period and the interest rate. Nothing is charged until you switch it on and use it.
That last point is where most of the confusion sits. This is borrowing, not a payment method, and the cost is set by your bank rather than by the rules. What follows is what the regulator fixed, what your bank decides, what it costs against the alternatives, and what happens if you miss a repayment.
What Is a Credit Line on UPI, and Who Can Issue One?
The Reserve Bank of India circular on the operation of pre-sanctioned credit lines through UPI, dated 4 September 2023 and updated in February 2025, expanded UPI to include credit lines as a funding account. Three parts of it matter to you.
Scheduled commercial banks may issue these credit lines, and payment banks and regional rural banks may not. If an app offers you something similar and no scheduled commercial bank is named behind it, that is a reason to look closer at what you are actually being offered.
The facility works only with your prior consent. It is not switched on by default and a bank cannot enable it silently.
And the terms are the bank’s. The circular lets each bank set the credit limit, the period of credit and the rate of interest under its own board approved policy. There is no regulated rate here, which is why two offers for the same person can differ substantially.
The rails themselves are run by the National Payments Corporation of India, which lists Credit Line on UPI among its UPI products. Your bank is the lender, and the network is only the route the payment takes.
This is a different product from a RuPay credit card linked to UPI, where you are spending on a credit card that happens to be reachable through a UPI app. A credit line is its own account.
How Do You Actually Switch It On?
The sequence is short, and the important step is the one people skip.
- Your bank sanctions a credit line, usually to existing customers it already has data on, and the offer appears in your banking or UPI app.
- You read the terms. The limit, the interest rate, the repayment period and any fees are all bank set, so this is the only place you will find out what yours actually cost.
- You give consent and link the credit line as a funding source in your UPI app, alongside your bank accounts.
- At payment, you choose the credit line rather than your account. The transaction looks identical to any other UPI payment, which is precisely the risk.
- You repay per the terms you accepted, not whenever you like.
Step two is where the money is. Because the transaction feels like a normal UPI payment, most people never revisit the terms after the first tap.
What Does a Credit Line on UPI Actually Cost?
The honest answer is that it depends on your bank, so the point of the arithmetic below is to show you the shape of the cost rather than a number to expect.
Assume Rs 20,000 spent and repaid over three months. The rates are illustrative for September 2026 and stand in for the range banks set.
| Rate set by the bank | Monthly repayment | Total interest over 3 months |
|---|---|---|
| 14 per cent a year | Rs 6,823 | Rs 468 |
| 18 per cent a year | Rs 6,868 | Rs 603 |
| 24 per cent a year | Rs 6,935 | Rs 805 |
On a short repayment the absolute interest is small. Rs 603 on Rs 20,000 over three months is not the thing that hurts people. What hurts is the same limit used repeatedly for spending that was never planned, because the borrowing is invisible at the point of payment.
One thing the circular does not fix is an interest free period. A credit card’s billing cycle gives you a window to pay without interest, and how that works is set out in this explainer on interest free credit card periods. On a credit line, whether any grace period exists is part of the bank’s terms, so check it rather than assuming.
Using a Credit Line Because a Card Balance Is Already Stretched?
Borrowing on one line to manage another is the point at which the total gets hard to see. Before adding a second source, it is worth knowing what the existing balance would cost restructured. See what your card balance would cost as an EMI.
Credit Line on UPI or a Credit Card: Which Is Cheaper?
This comparison is usually done wrong, because it compares the products rather than what you actually do with them.
| What you do | Interest on Rs 20,000 | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card, cleared in full in the billing cycle | Rs 0 | The interest free period applies |
| Credit line on UPI at 18 per cent, repaid over 3 months | Rs 603 | Interest accrues from use under the bank’s terms |
| Credit card, minimum due only at 3.5 per cent a month | About Rs 28,300 | The balance barely reduces and compounds |
Read all three rows together. A credit line is far cheaper than revolving a credit card, by roughly Rs 27,700 on this example, and strictly more expensive than clearing a card in full. So the product is not better or worse than a card. It is better than the worst thing people do with a card and worse than the best thing.
If you reliably clear your card each month, a credit line adds cost. If you routinely carry a balance, a structured credit line at a bank set rate is usually the cheaper of the two, provided you actually repay on the schedule.
What Happens If You Miss a Repayment?
Two consequences, and both are more durable than the transaction that caused them.
On charges, the Reserve Bank of India circular on penal charges in loan accounts requires a penalty to be levied as a flat penal charge rather than as penal interest added to your rate, and prohibits further interest being computed on that charge. This has applied since 1 January 2024. A late fee that is being compounded into your interest is not following the rule.
On your record, a credit line from a scheduled commercial bank is credit, so it is reported. Under the Reserve Bank of India Credit Information Reporting Directions, 2025, credit information is updated fortnightly, on the 15th and the last day of each month, and you are entitled to one free full credit report each January to December year. A missed repayment on a Rs 2,000 UPI transaction sits on that report exactly like any other missed payment.
The amount borrowed also counts toward what you owe, which affects the share of your available credit in use. How that works is covered in this piece on your credit utilisation ratio.
If your bank charges something the terms do not provide for, or does not resolve a complaint, the escalation route is the Reserve Bank of India consumer protection and Ombudsman framework, which covers banks and non banking financial companies.
What Should You Check Before You Activate It?
Because the terms are the bank’s rather than the regulator’s, this is the list that decides what the facility costs you.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The annual percentage rate, not a monthly figure | A monthly rate looks small and annualises to something very different |
| Whether any interest free period applies | It is not fixed by the circular, so it varies by bank and may not exist |
| The repayment period and whether it is fixed | It determines whether this behaves like a short loan or a revolving balance |
| Processing or activation fees | A one off fee changes the real cost of a small first transaction substantially |
| The penal charge for a missed repayment | It must be a flat charge rather than added to your interest rate |
| Whether the limit is shared with other facilities | Using it may reduce headroom you were relying on elsewhere |
If the app will not show you these before you consent, that is itself the answer.
The Risks People Underestimate
The payment does not feel like borrowing. A credit card has a physical moment and a monthly statement. A credit line on UPI is a source selection on a screen you tap dozens of times a month, and that is the whole risk in one sentence.
Small amounts accumulate invisibly. The limit is designed for everyday payments, which means the borrowing arrives in fragments rather than in one decision you remember making.
The rate is not standardised. Because each bank sets it, an offer that appears in your app is not comparable to one a friend received, and neither is capped by any rule.
Your UPI limits are a separate matter. Transaction caps on UPI are not the same as your credit limit, and the two get confused. The caps themselves are covered in this guide on UPI transaction limits.
Before accepting any digitally offered credit, the Reserve Bank of India Digital Lending Directions, 2025 require a Key Fact Statement showing the annual percentage rate before you accept, along with an option to exit during a cooling off period. If you cannot see an annual percentage rate before agreeing, stop there.
Who Should Switch It On, and Who Should Not
It can suit you if your income arrives after some of your bills do, if you would otherwise put short gaps on a credit card you do not clear in full, or if you want a defined limit rather than an open ended one. In each of those cases it replaces something more expensive.
It is the wrong tool if you already clear your credit card every month, because you would be adding interest to spending that currently costs nothing. It is also wrong if you are already behind on any existing repayment, since a new line does not reduce what you owe, and if your difficulty is that monthly outgo exceeds monthly income, because no credit line fixes that.
Leave it switched off if you are not sure. It is a facility you can activate later when there is a reason, and an unused sanction costs nothing.
The difference is which problem each one solves. A credit line handles new spending you have not made yet. Refinancing handles a balance you already carry. Using a credit line to pay down a card moves the debt rather than reducing it, and leaves you with two facilities instead of one. Eligibility for refinancing depends on your credit profile, an EMI is still a fixed monthly obligation, and if the card balance rebuilds afterwards the position is worse. Compare the total cost of each route before deciding. The steps that improve the profile both routes depend on are set out in this guide to improving your CIBIL score.
The Bottom Line
A credit line on UPI is borrowing that looks like paying. The regulator fixed who can issue it and that you must consent first, and left the limit, the period and the rate to your bank, so the terms in your app are the only ones that describe your cost.
Judge it against what you actually do rather than against the product. Cheaper than carrying a card balance, more expensive than clearing one, and riskiest in the case it is designed for, which is small payments you will not remember making.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a credit line on UPI?
It is a pre-sanctioned borrowing limit from your bank that you can spend through a UPI app instead of paying from your account balance. The Reserve Bank of India expanded UPI to include credit lines as a funding account in September 2023.
Which banks can offer a credit line on UPI?
Scheduled commercial banks. Payment banks and regional rural banks are excluded under the Reserve Bank of India circular, so an offer that does not have a scheduled commercial bank behind it is worth examining closely.
Can a bank activate a credit line on UPI without telling me?
No. The facility operates with the prior consent of the individual customer, so it has to be switched on by you. A sanctioned limit you have never activated is not in use.
What interest rate applies to a credit line on UPI?
Whatever your bank sets. The circular allows each bank to stipulate the credit limit, period of credit and rate of interest under its own board approved policy, so there is no standard rate and no regulated cap.
Is a credit line on UPI cheaper than a credit card?
It depends entirely on how you use the card. It is far cheaper than paying only the minimum due on a card, and more expensive than clearing a card in full within the interest free period, which costs nothing.
Does a credit line on UPI show on my credit report?
Yes. It is credit from a scheduled commercial bank, so it is reported like any other borrowing, and credit information is updated fortnightly on the 15th and the last day of each month.
Is there an interest free period on a credit line on UPI?
That is set by your bank rather than by the regulation, so it varies. Check the terms before you activate, because a credit card’s billing cycle grace period does not automatically apply here.
What happens if I miss a repayment on a credit line?
A penalty may be charged, and since 1 January 2024 it must be levied as a flat penal charge rather than as penal interest added to your rate, with no further interest computed on it. The missed payment is also reported to credit bureaus.
Is a credit line on UPI the same as a RuPay credit card on UPI?
No. With a RuPay credit card on UPI you are spending on a credit card that is reachable through a UPI app. A credit line is a separate borrowing account that becomes a funding source in the app.
Can I use a credit line on UPI to pay off my credit card?
That moves the balance rather than reducing it, and leaves you with two facilities to service instead of one. Compare the total cost of repaying or restructuring the existing balance before shifting it.
